Kenmore Dryer F01: Main Board Memory Fault
Identify Your Dryer's Manufacturer First
Your Kenmore dryer stopped mid-cycle and shows F01 — a main control board memory fault. Before investigating, you must determine which company built your specific unit, because error code interpretation depends entirely on the OEM platform.
Check your model number (sticker inside the door frame or on the back panel). The first three digits before the period identify the manufacturer:
- 110.xxxxx — Whirlpool-built (the most common Kenmore dryer platform). F01 = EEPROM (electronically erasable programmable read-only memory) failure on the main board. This guide focuses on this platform.
- 796.xxxxx — LG-built (Kenmore Elite dryers). Uses LG error codes — F01 is not a standard LG code.
- 417.xxxxx — Frigidaire-built. Uses Frigidaire error codes — different system.

What F01 Means on Whirlpool-Built 110-Series
On the Whirlpool platform, the main control board stores its operating parameters — cycle definitions, timing tables, sensor calibration data, and diagnostic history — in EEPROM memory. F01 posts when the board detects a checksum error in this memory: the stored data does not match its expected integrity check.
This can mean the EEPROM chip has physically failed, the data has become corrupted, or the communication bus between the processor and EEPROM on the board has a fault.
The Power Cycle Test
Before replacing the board, try a full power cycle:
- Unplug the dryer from the outlet (or turn off the breaker)
- Wait 10 full minutes — longer than the usual 5-minute reset. The extended wait allows EEPROM charge to fully dissipate.
- Plug back in
On approximately 20% of F01 occurrences, the power cycle clears the corruption and the EEPROM functions normally. If F01 does not return after several drying cycles, the corruption was a one-time event — possibly caused by a power fluctuation or static discharge.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

When Power Cycle Fails: Board Replacement
If F01 returns after power cycling, the EEPROM has a persistent failure — the chip or its supporting circuitry on the board is physically damaged. The EEPROM is soldered to the board and is not independently replaceable in a home service setting.
Main control board replacement: $80-$180 depending on model. The board is located behind the back panel (most 110-series models) or behind the top panel.
Board installation: Disconnect power. Remove the back panel (typically 4-6 screws). Photograph all wire connections before disconnecting anything. Remove the old board's mounting screws, unplug all harnesses, and install the new board. Reconnect all harnesses per your photographs.
Some replacement boards come pre-programmed for your model. Others require configuration after installation — check the board's documentation. Misconfigured boards can cause incorrect cycle behavior even after F01 clears.
Wiring-Related F01
In rare cases, F01 is caused not by the EEPROM itself but by noise on the communication bus between the main control board and the user interface (UI) board. Electrical noise from arcing relay contacts, a failing motor, or external EMI sources (a ham radio, a failing fluorescent light ballast nearby) can corrupt data during transfer, which the main board interprets as an EEPROM error.
If F01 recurs after board replacement, investigate sources of electrical noise in the dryer's environment and in the dryer itself (arcing contacts, loose harness connections).
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Kenmore Model Number Decoding Detail
For 110-series Kenmore dryers, the full model number provides additional information:
- 110.6xxxx = Whirlpool-designed gas dryer
- 110.7xxxx = Whirlpool-designed electric dryer
- 110.8xxxx = Whirlpool premium/Elite electric dryer
All use the same basic Whirlpool control platform, but board part numbers differ by sub-model. Always order the board using your complete model number, not just the 110 prefix.

F01 After a Lightning Strike or Power Surge
Power surges are a common F01 trigger. The EEPROM chip is sensitive to voltage spikes — even brief spikes that do not trip the circuit breaker can corrupt stored data or physically damage the chip. If F01 appeared after a storm, the board likely needs replacement. Install a surge protector to prevent future damage.
Questions About Kenmore F01
F01 appeared once and never came back after unplugging. Should I worry? Probably not. A single corrupted EEPROM read that clears with a power cycle is usually a one-time event caused by a minor power disturbance. Monitor over the next few weeks — if F01 does not recur, no repair is needed.
Can I reprogram the EEPROM instead of replacing the board? Theoretically possible with specialized equipment, but impractical for home service. The EEPROM's firmware image is not publicly available, and the tools required (EEPROM programmer, correct firmware file) are not standard service equipment. Board replacement is the standard repair.
My Kenmore dryer shows F01 but the model starts with 796. Is this the same code? No — 796 prefix means LG-built. LG uses a different error code system. An LG-platform Kenmore dryer should not display "F01" in the Whirlpool format. If you see this code on a 796-series, it may be a display anomaly — consult LG error code documentation.
