LG Dryer CL: This Is Not an Error Code
CL is the child lock indicator, not a malfunction. When CL appears on the display, every button on the control panel is disabled except Power. The dryer is functioning perfectly — it just will not respond to any input because the child lock safety feature is active.
How to Disable CL
The unlock procedure varies by LG dryer model generation, but one of these three methods works on every LG dryer manufactured since 2010:
Method 1: Press and Hold Child Lock Button (5 seconds)
Look for a button labeled with a padlock icon or "Child Lock" — sometimes combined with another function as a secondary label (smaller text below the primary label). Press and hold for 5 seconds until the display shows the lock icon disappearing and a tone sounds.
Method 2: Press and Hold Dry Level + Temp (3 seconds)
On models without a dedicated Child Lock button, press and hold the Dry Level button and the Temp button simultaneously for 3 seconds. A chime confirms CL is deactivated.
Method 3: Press and Hold two adjacent buttons (3 seconds)
Some LG dryer models use two adjacent buttons on the lower row of the control panel. Check the control panel label — there is typically a small bracket line connecting two buttons with a lock icon between them. Hold both for 3 seconds.
If none of these work, check your model's quick-start guide (usually taped inside the door opening or on the back of the dryer). The exact button combination is printed there.

How CL Gets Activated Accidentally
The most common reason people are surprised by CL: a child (or adult) leaned on or pressed the control panel while the dryer was idle, hitting the lock combination. On models where the combination is pressing two adjacent buttons, this happens from setting folded clothes on top of the dryer. The fabric settles and presses the buttons long enough to activate the lock.
The second most common: you activated CL intentionally months ago and forgot. CL persists through power cycles — unplugging and plugging back in does not reset it. The lock survives power outages, breaker trips, and even moving the dryer to a new location.
CL vs. dE and Other Codes
CL is the only dryer display code that is entirely normal and user-controlled. It requires no repair, no service call, and no parts. Every other code on an LG dryer (dE, d80, HS, tE1, PF, nP, PS) indicates an actual condition or fault.
If you see CL flashing rather than displayed steadily, the control board may be malfunctioning — stuck buttons or a failing membrane keypad can send the lock command continuously. In this case, see if the unlock procedure works. If CL immediately re-engages after unlocking, the control panel has a physical issue (stuck button, moisture under the membrane) rather than a user-set lock.

ThinQ App Control
On Wi-Fi-enabled LG dryers connected to the ThinQ app, Child Lock can be toggled from the app under the dryer's settings menu. If the physical buttons are unresponsive (stuck, panel damage), the app provides an alternative method to disable CL.
When CL Appears During a Running Cycle
Activating CL while a cycle is already running does not stop the cycle — it prevents new inputs. The current cycle runs to completion. CL blocks starting new cycles, changing settings, or pressing any button except Power. This is the intended behavior: it prevents a child from opening the door or changing the cycle mid-operation without stopping the dryer suddenly.
CL is not a repair issue — it is a 5-second button hold. If your LG dryer has an actual fault code, book diagnostic service and we will diagnose the real problem.
