Maytag Dryer AF: Restricted Exhaust Airflow Detected
AF is an airflow-specific code: the control board's exhaust thermistor measured temperatures exceeding the safety threshold because hot air is not leaving the dryer fast enough. Unlike heating element codes (F3, F4 series), AF points exclusively at the venting system — the path from the dryer's blower wheel through the ductwork to the exterior wall cap.
How Maytag Detects Airflow Restriction
Maytag commercial-grade dryers use a dual-thermistor approach. One thermistor measures inlet air temperature (ambient room air entering the drum). The second measures exhaust air temperature (heated air exiting through the lint screen housing). The control board calculates the temperature differential. In unrestricted airflow, the exhaust thermistor reads 15-35 degrees F above inlet. When the vent is restricted, exhaust temperature climbs because hot air recirculates inside the drum instead of exiting. AF triggers when the exhaust thermistor exceeds 155 degrees F or the inlet-exhaust differential exceeds 50 degrees F for more than 5 consecutive minutes.

Diagnosis: Start at the Outside, Work Inward
1. Exterior Vent Hood (Check First — 30% of AF Cases)
Go outside and locate the vent exit point. The flap should swing open freely when dryer runs. Common problems:
- Bird nest or wasp nest inside the hood cavity
- Lint buildup matting the flap shut
- Screen mesh added by previous homeowner (lint clogs screens within months)
- Flap spring too stiff (replace with a magnetic-closure hood for better airflow)
2. Vent Duct Run
Disconnect the vent from the rear of the dryer. Run the dryer for 5 minutes with the vent disconnected (exhaust into the room). If AF clears immediately, the duct system is the problem.
Duct cleaning: Use a 4-inch vent brush kit (extends 12-20 feet). Push from the dryer end toward the exterior. At each 90-degree elbow, lint accumulates on the outer radius of the turn. Maximum recommended duct length for Maytag dryers: 35 equivalent feet (each 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet, each 45-degree as 2.5 feet).
Duct material upgrade: Replace any corrugated foil flex duct with smooth rigid or semi-rigid aluminum. Corrugated surfaces trap lint 3-4 times faster than smooth walls. This single upgrade often resolves chronic AF codes permanently.
3. Transition Duct (Behind the Dryer)
The short flexible section connecting the dryer exhaust port to the wall vent pipe is the most commonly crushed section. When the dryer is pushed against the wall, this duct compresses. Use a close-clearance dryer vent adapter ($12-18) if space behind the dryer is less than 6 inches.
4. Internal Blower Wheel
If AF persists with the vent disconnected, the internal airflow path is restricted. The blower wheel sits on the motor shaft behind the drum. Lint that bypasses the lint screen wraps around the blower wheel hub, reducing blade efficiency.
Access (electric dryers): Remove the front or rear panel (model-dependent). The blower housing is at the lower-rear of the drum. Remove the blower wheel (typically one clip ring), clean all lint from the vanes and shaft.
Fire Safety Context
Dryer vent fires cause an estimated 2,900 house fires annually in the United States (NFPA data). Restricted airflow is the primary ignition mechanism — lint accumulation combined with elevated exhaust temperatures creates combustion conditions. AF is your early warning. Ignoring it increases fire risk with every dryer cycle.
