Frigidaire Dryer E4A: Exhaust Temperature Sensor Open Circuit
Why the Dryer Stops
Your Frigidaire dryer will not operate without knowing exhaust air temperature. The exhaust thermistor monitors air leaving the drum to prevent overheating and to regulate heating element cycling. When the board reads infinite resistance on this sensor circuit, it logs E4A and shuts down the heating system. The drum may still tumble, but no heat is produced.

Where the Sensor Lives
The exhaust thermistor mounts on the blower housing or exhaust duct at the rear of the dryer, downstream from the drum. On Frigidaire Affinity front-load dryers, access it by removing the lower rear panel (four screws). On Gallery stack dryers, the sensor is accessible from inside the drum by removing the lint screen housing assembly.
The sensor connects through a two-pin plug to the main control board. The wiring runs along the dryer chassis and is secured with clips at several points where vibration could chafe the insulation.
Testing the Sensor
Pull the dryer plug from the wall outlet. Locate the exhaust thermistor at the blower housing. Disconnect its two-pin connector. Measure resistance across the sensor leads:
- At room temperature (72F): Expect 10,000-12,000 ohms (10K NTC type used by Frigidaire dryers)
- Infinite (OL): Open circuit confirmed. The sensor's internal element has fractured, usually from repeated thermal cycling over seven to ten years of use.
- Under 1,000 ohms: Shorted. Less common but also triggers E4A on some board firmware versions.
If the sensor reads within the normal range, measure continuity through the wiring harness from the sensor connector back to the board connector. An open wire between the sensor and board produces the same E4A reading as a failed sensor.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Replacement Procedure
Part: 137539200 (Frigidaire/Electrolux platform exhaust NTC), $12-$25.
- Unplug dryer. Remove lower rear panel.
- Locate the sensor on the blower housing. Release the mounting clip (one spring clip or single screw).
- Disconnect the two-pin connector. Remove old sensor.
- Install new sensor in the same orientation. Ensure the sensing tip contacts the exhaust duct wall for accurate readings.
- Reconnect the plug. Reassemble the panel. Run a timed dry cycle on High heat. The dryer should produce heat and the drum exhaust should reach 150-170 degrees within ten minutes.
When It Is Not the Sensor
If the new sensor still shows E4A, the wiring harness has a break. Dryer vibration during the spin cycle stresses wire connections at clip points and connector pins. Inspect each clip location along the harness run. A broken wire at a clip point is repairable with a butt splice and heat-shrink.
If wiring is intact, the board's analog input circuit for the exhaust sensor has failed. Board replacement (model-specific, $100-$180) is required.

Frigidaire Dryer Tier Differences
Standard Frigidaire dryers use a single exhaust thermistor. Gallery models add a second thermistor at the heater box inlet for more precise temperature control. If you have a Gallery model showing E4A, confirm which sensor position the code references by checking the tech sheet (folded inside the lower front panel or taped to the back).

FAQ
Can I run the dryer on air-dry (no heat) with E4A? On most Frigidaire models, E4A locks out all cycles including no-heat tumble because the board requires the sensor for safety monitoring even when the element is off.
E4A appeared after moving the dryer. Related? Very likely. Moving the dryer can snag or stretch the sensor wiring, pulling a connector loose or breaking a wire at a stress point.
Does E4A affect gas Frigidaire dryers the same way? Yes. Gas models use the same exhaust thermistor. The sensor monitors exhaust temperature regardless of whether heat comes from a gas burner or electric element.
