Kenmore Dishwasher F9E1: Diverter Motor Position Error
What the Diverter System Does
Your Kenmore dishwasher (665.xxxxx model prefix, Whirlpool-built) displays F9E1 — the diverter disc motor cannot reach its commanded position. The code decodes as:
- F9 = Function 9: the diverter/direction control system
- E1 = Error 1: motor position feedback does not match the commanded target
Modern Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers route wash water through multiple spray arms using a diverter system. Instead of running all spray arms simultaneously (which would reduce pressure at each arm), the diverter directs pressurized water to different zones sequentially — upper spray arm, lower spray arm, and middle spray arm (if equipped) — rotating through them during each wash phase.
The diverter is a motorized disc valve in the sump area that rotates to open and close water paths. A position sensor on the motor reports the disc's actual position to the board. F9E1 posts when the board commands the disc to a specific position but the position sensor does not confirm arrival.

Common F9E1 Causes
Debris in the Diverter Housing
Food particles, grease, and mineral deposits can accumulate in the diverter housing around the disc. This debris increases friction, and the motor cannot rotate the disc through the buildup. The disc stops short of its target position.
The diverter assembly is located in the sump area — accessible from below the dishwasher after removing the kick plate and tipping or accessing the machine from underneath. Disassembly of the diverter housing allows cleaning of the disc, seal, and housing interior.
Motor Failure
The diverter motor is a small gear motor that drives the disc through a gear reduction. Over years, the motor can fail (burned winding, seized gears), or the gear teeth can strip — allowing the motor to spin freely while the disc remains stationary.
Test by disconnecting the motor and measuring winding resistance (expect 200-1500 ohms). Also verify the gear train is intact — the motor shaft should turn the disc when rotated by hand.
Motor/diverter assembly replacement: $40-$80.
Position Sensor Failure
The position sensor (typically a potentiometer or optical encoder) tracks the disc's angular position and reports it to the board. A failed sensor provides no position feedback or incorrect feedback — the board thinks the disc never reached the target.
On assemblies where the sensor is integrated with the motor, the entire diverter assembly is replaced as a unit.
Wiring or Connector Issues
The diverter motor and sensor connect to the main board via a multi-pin connector. Corroded pins, loose connectors, or broken wires prevent the position feedback signal from reaching the board. Clean connectors, re-seat firmly, and check for wire damage.
Impact on Wash Quality
F9E1 may allow the dishwasher to run partial cycles — the wash motor still circulates water. But without the diverter switching between spray arms, only one zone receives water pressure (typically the lower spray arm). Upper rack dishes receive minimal water and come out dirty. If you notice only your upper rack is not getting clean, a diverter issue may be present even before F9E1 formally posts.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Kenmore-Specific Diverter Context
Not all 665-series Kenmore dishwashers have diverter systems. Older models and some budget-tier models use fixed water distribution (all spray arms active simultaneously). If your dishwasher does not have a diverter disc, F9E1 should not appear. Check your service manual to confirm whether your specific model includes the diverter system.
Models with diverters tend to be the higher-capacity or feature-rich 665-series units that were Whirlpool's mid-range platform.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

The Diverter Maintenance Tip
Running a dishwasher cleaner cycle (Affresh, Finish, or Lemi Shine dishwasher cleaner) every 2-3 months dissolves grease and mineral deposits throughout the wash system, including the diverter housing. This preventive step reduces the likelihood of debris accumulation that causes F9E1. On dishwashers in hard-water areas, monthly cleaner cycles are worth the $3-$5 cost of the cleaner tablet.
Questions About Kenmore F9E1
Only my upper rack dishes are dirty. Is this F9E1? Possibly — if the diverter is stuck in the lower-arm-only position, the upper arm receives no water pressure. F9E1 posts when the board detects the position error, but partial diverter failures can affect wash quality before the board formally logs the code.
Can I run the dishwasher with F9E1 active? On some models, yes — the wash cycle continues with water directed to a default zone (usually the lower spray arm). Dishes may not get fully clean because not all zones receive directed water pressure.
Is the diverter motor a separate part from the wash motor? Yes — the diverter motor is a small gear motor that rotates the diverter disc. The wash motor (a much larger motor) drives the main wash pump that circulates water. They are independent components.
