Maytag Dishwasher F2 E2: UI Board Communication Failure
F2 E2 on a Maytag dishwasher means the main control board lost communication with the user interface (UI) board mounted inside the door panel. The dishwasher cannot display cycle status, accept button inputs, or start a cycle.
Dishwasher UI Communication Design
Maytag dishwasher UI boards are mounted on the inner face of the door, connected to the main control board (mounted underneath the tub) by a wire harness that passes through the door hinge area. This hinge-routed harness endures thousands of open/close flexing cycles — the #1 stress point in the entire dishwasher electrical system.

Primary Failure Mode: Door Hinge Wire Fatigue
In 45% of F2 E2 cases, the connecting harness has fractured at the hinge point. Each door open/close bends the harness wires. After 10,000+ cycles (3-5 years of heavy use), individual conductors break inside their insulation.
Diagnosis: Open and close the dishwasher door slowly while observing the display. If the display flickers, turns on/off, or F2 E2 appears/disappears during door movement, the hinge harness is the problem.
Fix: Replace the door wiring harness. Access the harness by removing the inner door panel (Torx screws around the perimeter of the door interior). The harness routes through a conduit at the hinge — thread the new harness through the same path. Part number varies by model; typical cost $20-35.
Secondary Causes
UI Board Failure (25% of Cases)
Steam and moisture from the wash cycle enter the door cavity and condense on the UI board. Over time, corrosion damages traces and component leads. If the harness tests good (continuity on all conductors), the UI board is the next suspect.
Diagnosis: Inspect the UI board for visible corrosion, especially around connector pins and near the board edges where condensation collects first. A board with green or white deposits on component leads is failing.
Part: UI board assembly — model-specific, $45-90.
Main Board Communication Port Failure (15% of Cases)
The main board's serial port IC can fail from voltage spikes or age. If both a new harness and a new UI board still produce F2 E2, the main board is at fault.
Part: Main control board — model-specific, $75-160.
Connector Pin Pushback (15% of Cases)
A terminal pin in one of the harness connectors has been pushed out of its housing (from improper insertion during manufacturing or prior service). The pin makes intermittent contact based on vibration and door position.
Fix: Inspect connector housings for pins that are recessed compared to their neighbors. Use a small pick tool to reseat the pin until the retention tang clicks. No parts needed.

Post-Repair Verification
After repair, run a complete wash cycle and verify:
- Display shows cycle selection and time remaining throughout
- All buttons respond to presses
- Cycle completes without F2 E2 returning
- Door open/close does not affect display operation
