Kenmore Dishwasher Not Draining — Drain System Differences by OEM Platform
Standing water in the bottom of your Kenmore dishwasher after a cycle indicates that the drain system failed to evacuate water. This is one of the most common dishwasher complaints regardless of brand, but on Kenmore units the repair approach depends on which manufacturer built your unit because the drain pump mounting, connection type, and access method vary significantly between platforms. A Whirlpool-platform 665 model has a screw-mount drain pump accessible without pulling the unit out, while an LG-platform 630 model uses a bayonet connection that requires tipping the machine.
Quick Check Before Platform-Specific Diagnosis
Before investigating the dishwasher itself, check the external drain path:
-
Garbage disposal knockout: If your dishwasher connects to a garbage disposal and the disposal was recently installed or replaced, verify that the drain knockout plug inside the disposal was removed. This plastic plug blocks the dishwasher drain port when no dishwasher is connected — installers sometimes forget to punch it out.
-
Drain hose high loop: The drain hose must loop up to at least 20 inches above the floor before descending to the disposal/drain connection. Without this loop, dirty water from the sink can backfill into the dishwasher.
-
Air gap (if installed): Some installations include an air gap device on the counter next to the faucet. If the air gap is clogged with debris, water cannot drain from the dishwasher regardless of pump function.

Platform-Specific Drain Systems
Whirlpool 665 Platform — Side-Mount Drain Pump
On Whirlpool-manufactured Kenmore dishwashers, the drain pump is a separate small motor that mounts on the side of the main circulation motor/sump housing. It has its own impeller and connects to the drain hose via a rubber coupler secured with a spring hose clamp. The pump receives 120V AC from the control board when a drain event is commanded.
Access is through the front kick panel — no need to pull the dishwasher out for this repair. The drain pump sits on the lower left side when facing the unit.
Common failure modes on 665 models:
- Impeller jammed by glass fragments or bone chips (most common — accounts for 40% of drain failures)
- Pump motor windings burned (usually preceded by a burning smell)
- Rubber coupler deteriorated, allowing air into the pump (pump runs but cannot create suction)
DIY Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Parts Cost: $35–$75 (Whirlpool W10348269 or equivalent Kenmore cross-reference) Professional Repair Cost: $140–$260
Repair Steps:
- Disconnect power at the breaker. Place towels under the kick panel area — water will drain when you disconnect the hose.
- Remove the kick panel (two Phillips screws at the bottom).
- Identify the drain pump — small cylindrical motor on the left side of the sump housing with one hose connection.
- Squeeze the spring clamp on the drain hose and slide it back, then pull the hose off the pump outlet. Water will pour out — have a shallow pan ready.
- Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the pump.
- Remove the pump from the sump housing — on most 665 models, it twists out counterclockwise (3 tabs lock into the sump).
- Check the impeller for debris. If the impeller is damaged or the motor feels rough/seized when rotated by hand, replace the pump.
- Install the new pump by aligning tabs and twisting clockwise until locked. Reconnect hose (ensure clamp is tight) and electrical connector.
LG 630 Platform — Bottom-Mount Bayonet Drain Pump
On LG-manufactured Kenmore dishwashers, the drain pump mounts on the bottom of the sump assembly using a quarter-turn bayonet connection. This design differs fundamentally from Whirlpool's approach — the pump is not accessible from the front kick panel on most models and requires either tipping the unit back or pulling it out from the cabinet.
The LG drain pump uses tighter impeller clearances than the Whirlpool version, which means it is more vulnerable to small debris but also provides stronger suction when clean.
Common failure modes on 630 models:
- Bayonet connection loosened from vibration (pump appears to run but drains intermittently or slowly)
- Impeller seized by debris (grinding noise then failure to drain)
- O-ring seal failure at bayonet causing leak into base pan, triggering flood sensor before drain completes
DIY Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Parts Cost: $45–$90 (LG 4681EA2001T) Professional Repair Cost: $160–$300
Repair Steps:
- Disconnect power and water supply.
- Pull the dishwasher out from the cabinet (disconnect drain hose at the disposal end and water supply at the valve).
- Carefully lay the dishwasher on its back (protect the door with a towel on the floor).
- Locate the drain pump on the bottom of the sump — it is the smaller of the two pump assemblies.
- Disconnect the electrical connector (squeeze the locking tab).
- Rotate the pump body counterclockwise 90 degrees and pull straight down to release from the sump.
- Inspect the impeller chamber — glass shards are the most common obstruction on this platform.
- If replacing: install new pump by aligning the tabs with the sump slots, pushing up firmly, and rotating clockwise until it clicks into the locked position.
- Verify the O-ring is seated properly before locking — a pinched O-ring will leak immediately on first use.
Frigidaire 587 Platform — Integrated Drain System
Frigidaire-manufactured Kenmore dishwashers use a drain pump integrated into the main circulation motor housing. The pump shares the motor with the wash system — a directional valve routes water either to the spray arms (wash) or to the drain hose (drain). When the drain function fails on this platform, it can be the directional valve rather than the pump motor itself.
Common failure modes on 587 models:
- Directional valve stuck in wash position (motor runs but water goes to spray arms instead of drain)
- Drain impeller broken (motor hums during drain but no water moves)
- Drain solenoid valve failed (electrical component that activates the directional change)
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $40–$100 Professional Repair Cost: $160–$280
Drain Hose Issues (All Platforms)
Before replacing any pump, verify the drain hose is not the problem:
Kinked hose: The drain hose routes from the pump through the cabinet side and up to the air gap or high loop. On 665 models, it exits the left side; on 630 models, the right side. Check for kinks at every turn point.
Clogged hose: Grease and food particles can build up inside the drain hose over years, especially at the high loop where water velocity drops. Disconnect the hose at both ends and flush with hot water. If flow is restricted, replace the hose.
Hose too long or too short: A drain hose that dips below the level of the disposal connection creates a water trap that the pump must overcome. If the hose was cut too long during installation, trim it to eliminate low spots.
Parts Cost: $12–$30 for universal drain hose Professional Repair Cost: $80–$140

Error Codes for Drain Failures
Each platform reports drain failures differently:
- Whirlpool 665: Error F8E4 on display models, or Clean light flashing 7 times on non-display models
- LG 630: Error code OE on the digital display
- Frigidaire 587: Error code i20 (blinking 2 times on LED models)
If you see one of these codes, the board has already tried to drain and timed out. On Whirlpool models, the timeout is 120 seconds. On LG models, 90 seconds. If the pump starts briefly then stops, the issue is likely debris jamming the impeller — the motor overloads and the board cuts power to protect it.

Drain Pump Testing
If you want to verify the pump motor before replacing it:
- Access the pump's electrical connector.
- With a multimeter, measure resistance across the motor leads with the connector removed.
- Expected readings: Whirlpool pumps 15-25 ohms; LG pumps 10-20 ohms.
- Open circuit (infinite ohms) = burned motor winding. Short to ground = insulation failure (dangerous, replace immediately).

Prevention
- Always scrape large food debris from dishes before loading (especially glass fragments, bones, and fruit pits)
- Run the garbage disposal before starting the dishwasher — a full disposal blocks the drain path
- Monthly: run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner to dissolve grease buildup in the drain path
- Annually: pull the dishwasher out and inspect the drain hose for buildup at the high loop
