Whirlpool Portable Dishwasher: Lights Flashing

The three-second window is the part nobody expects. On a portable, you press Start/Resume and then close the door, and the machine gives you only a moment to finish the job. Miss it and you get a flashing light, sometimes an audible tone, and a cycle that never starts.

What the flashing light means#

The delay wash option is worth calling out on its own. If a delay is set, the machine is waiting by design, and a light that flashes during that wait is easy to read as a fault when it is really the delay doing exactly what it was told.

How to fix it#

1. Press Start/Resume and push the door firmly closed within three seconds. Firmly is the operative word — a door resting against the latch without engaging it counts as not closed.
2. If a delay is set and you want to wash now, press Cancel/Drain to cancel the delay.
3. Then press Start/Resume again to start a cycle without a delay.
4. If the light is still flashing, unplug the unit for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
5. On an installation fed from a breaker rather than a cord, turn the breaker off and then back on instead.

Work through those in order. Steps 1 to 3 solve the great majority, because the great majority are a missed door catch or a delay nobody remembered setting.

When to call a technician#

Call when the light still flashes after all five. If the door has been caught inside the window, the delay has been cancelled, a cycle has been started without one, and the unit has been fully power-cycled, then the interruption is not coming from anything you can reach at the front of the machine. The part in play at that point is the control panel — the thing reading your presses and the door and deciding whether a cycle may begin.

Why is the Start/Resume light flashing on my portable dishwasher?#

Because the cycle or the start-up was interrupted. On select models that light flashes to say the machine was asked to begin something it could not complete cleanly.

Why does the door have to be closed within three seconds?#

That is the window the dishwasher gives you after Start/Resume is pressed. If the door is not closed inside it, the light flashes, a tone may sound, and the cycle will not start.

I set a delay wash and now the light is blinking. Is that a fault?#

Usually not. Press Cancel/Drain to cancel the delay, then press Start/Resume to run a cycle without one. If it starts normally, the delay was the whole story.

Will unplugging it help?#

It can. Unplug the unit for 30 seconds and plug it back in — or, on an installation fed from a breaker, switch the breaker off and back on. That clears a control that is stuck rather than waiting.

What part is likely at fault if nothing works?#

The control panel. Once the door, the delay and a full power cycle have all been ruled out, the panel reading your presses is the component a technician goes to.
