Frigidaire Dryer EF0: Power Supply Fault
What EF0 Detects
EF0 fires when the control board detects that the incoming power supply does not meet specifications. On electric dryers (which require 240V split-phase), this means one or both legs of the 240V supply is missing, low, or unstable. On gas dryers (120V), the supply voltage is too low or fluctuating.

Electric Dryer: The Missing Leg Problem
A 240V electric dryer receives power through two hot legs (L1 and L2), each carrying 120V relative to neutral. Combined, they provide 240V for the heating element. The motor, controls, and timer run on 120V from a single leg.
If one leg loses power (a tripped breaker in the panel, a failed connection, or a problem at the outlet), the dryer loses half its supply. The motor may still run on 120V from the surviving leg, but the element cannot heat (it requires 240V across both legs). The board detects the missing leg through its voltage monitoring circuit and logs EF0.
Common causes of a missing leg:
- One pole of a double-pole breaker tripped independently (possible on older breaker panels where the two poles are not mechanically tied)
- A loose wire at the dryer outlet or at the breaker
- A failed outlet (burned contact on one prong receptor)
- The dryer cord has a broken conductor inside one of its wires
Diagnosis
- At the dryer outlet (with the dryer unplugged), measure voltage. You should read: L1 to L2 = 240V, L1 to ground = 120V, L2 to ground = 120V. If any reading is zero or significantly low, the electrical supply is the problem.
- Check the breaker panel. The dryer breaker should be a double-pole type. Reset both poles. If one pole will not stay engaged, the breaker has failed and needs replacement (electrician work).
- If outlet voltage is correct, check the dryer cord connections. Remove the access panel at the rear of the dryer where the cord enters. Verify all wire terminals are tight and no conductor is broken or corroded.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Gas Dryer: Low Voltage
Gas dryers on 120V can show EF0 when voltage drops below approximately 100V. This happens on overloaded circuits (especially if the dryer shares a circuit with other appliances), with long extension cords (never use one for a dryer), or during brownout conditions.

When EF0 Is a Board Problem
If incoming voltage tests correct at the outlet and the dryer cord connections are solid, the board's voltage monitoring circuit may have failed. This is uncommon but possible after a power surge. Board replacement is the solution.
FAQ
My dryer drum spins but produces no heat. Is that EF0? If the drum spins and the display shows EF0, yes. The motor runs on 120V from the surviving leg while the element has no 240V. If the drum spins with no error code, the problem is different (element or thermostat issue).
Can a power surge cause EF0? A surge can damage the board's voltage monitoring circuit, producing a false EF0 even with correct supply voltage. More commonly, surges trip breakers, which creates a genuine missing-leg condition.
EF0 appeared during a storm. Will it clear? If a power fluctuation tripped a breaker, resetting the breaker clears EF0. If the surge damaged the board or outlet, repair is needed.
