Most Likely Cause#
A Frigidaire dryer making noise almost always comes down to a worn mechanical support part, and the type of sound tells you which one. Thumping means worn drum rollers, squealing means a worn belt or idler pulley, scraping means worn drum glides, and rattling means a foreign object. Worn drum support rollers are the single most common source.
Instead of guessing, listen first. Matching the character of the noise to the part that makes it turns a vague "it's loud" into a specific check, so you inspect the right component rather than tearing the whole dryer apart.
Frigidaire Dryer Noises and Their Sources#
| Sound | Cause | Share of cases |
|---|---|---|
| Rhythmic thumping, worse with big loads | Worn drum support rollers | 35% |
| Squealing at startup, may ease as it warms | Worn drive belt | 25% |
| Scraping or grinding at the front | Worn drum glides or slides | 20% |
| Constant squeal that ignores load size | Idler-pulley bearing worn | 15% |
| Scraping or clicking that comes and goes | Foreign object in the drum | 5% |

How Frigidaire Dryer Noise Maps to Parts#
Each noise has a mechanical source. Drum support rollers — usually two to four — carry the drum as it spins, and when they wear they develop flat spots that thump once per revolution, louder under heavier loads; this accounts for the great majority of thumping complaints. The drive belt squeals at startup when glazed and thumps intermittently when fraying. Drum glides at the front of the drum keep it off the metal bulkhead, so when they wear thin they scrape or grind. The idler pulley keeps the belt taut, and a worn idler bearing squeals continuously, independent of load. Foreign objects wedged near the bulkhead scrape or click as the drum turns. Reading the sound points to the part.
Check It Yourself First#
Before troubleshooting your Frigidaire dryer, disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit.
- Name the noise. Thumping means rollers; startup squeal means the belt; a scrape at the front means glides; a constant squeal means the idler; intermittent scraping means a foreign object.
- Spin the rollers. Remove the front panel and spin each roller by hand — flat spots, wobble, or roughness mean worn rollers. Replace all of them together to avoid a repeat visit.
- Inspect the belt. Look for glazing, cracks, and fraying; a glazed belt squeals and a frayed one thumps as the damaged section passes the pulleys.
- Check the glides and idler. Worn front glides scrape metal-to-metal; a gritty or noisy idler pulley squeals constantly when spun by hand.
- Clear foreign objects. Check the lint housing, the felt seal areas, and between the drum and bulkhead for coins, buttons, or zippers producing intermittent noise.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair or Replace?#
Rollers, a belt, glides, and an idler are inexpensive, and many technicians replace rollers, belt, and idler together as a preventive kit to avoid repeat calls. On a Frigidaire dryer, these are well worth repairing against a new machine — get a quote only if a major component like the motor is also failing.
When to Call a Pro#
Call for service if the rollers, belt, or idler need replacing and you would rather not open the cabinet, or if grinding suggests metal-to-metal contact that could damage the drum. Catching it early keeps a cheap noise repair from becoming an expensive one.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Prevent Noise on Your Frigidaire Dryer#
A few habits keep a dryer quiet and head off the bigger repairs. Do not overload the drum, since heavy wet loads accelerate the flat-spotting of the rollers that causes most thumping. Check pockets and zip zippers before drying so coins and hardware do not lodge near the bulkhead and scrape. And treat the first new sound as a warning: a startup squeal is a belt beginning to fail, and a rhythmic thump is a roller flattening — replacing the wear parts as a set at that point is far cheaper than waiting for a snapped belt or a scored drum. Keeping the dryer level also spreads roller wear evenly.
