Frigidaire Dryer E68: Current Detected When Element Should Be Off
How E68 Differs from E61
Both codes relate to the heating element staying on when it should not. E61 triggers from temperature rising above the expected setpoint. E68 triggers from the current sense circuit detecting amperage through the element after the relay has been commanded open. E68 is the more precise diagnostic because it detects the electrical cause directly rather than the thermal effect.
On some Frigidaire dryer firmware versions, E61 and E68 can appear together. E68 fires first (current detected), then E61 fires seconds later (temperature exceeds limit).

Safety Priority
Unplug the dryer immediately. E68 confirms the heating circuit is receiving power when the board has commanded it off. A welded relay contact is the most likely cause.
Root Cause
The control board's heating relay contacts have welded together. Arc erosion from years of switching (or from a power spike during switching) fused the contacts permanently closed. Current flows through the element regardless of board commands.
On electric dryers, this means the heating element receives 240V continuously. On gas dryers, the gas valve stays energized, keeping the burner lit.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis
- Unplug dryer. Remove rear panel.
- Disconnect one element wire from its terminal.
- Plug dryer back in. Wait five minutes.
- If E68 does not return and the element stays cold, confirmed welded relay. Replace the board.
- If E68 still shows with the element disconnected, the current sense circuit on the board is reading phantom current (a board fault that does not pose a safety risk but still requires board replacement).
Board Replacement
Part: model-specific, $100-$180. Same procedure as E66: remove control panel, photograph connectors, transfer individually, ground yourself.

After Board Replacement
Run a full timed dry cycle on High heat. Verify the element cycles on and off normally (air temperature should fluctuate as the board modulates the element). Listen for relay clicks during cycling -- clean, firm clicks indicate healthy relay operation.
Also verify the exhaust vent is clean. A clogged vent causes the element to stay on longer per cycle, increasing the number of relay switching events and accelerating contact wear on the new board.

FAQ
Is E68 more dangerous than E61? They indicate the same underlying problem (relay stuck closed). E68 is detected electrically, E61 thermally. The safety risk is identical.
Can E68 trigger from a faulty current sensor? Yes, rarely. If the current sense resistor on the board develops a fault, it can report phantom current when none flows. This requires board replacement regardless.
I only see E68 in the error log. The dryer runs fine now. Should I repair? Yes. A relay that welded and then released is in end-stage failure. It will weld again, potentially during unattended operation.
E68 is a safety code requiring immediate diagnosis. Our technicians carry common Frigidaire dryer boards. Book urgent repair.
