Whirlpool Oven Temperature Sensor Replacement — The $15 Fix for Oven Temperature Problems
The oven temperature sensor is a thin metal probe that extends into the oven cavity from the top rear wall. It is an RTD (resistance temperature detector) that changes resistance proportionally with temperature. The control board reads this resistance to determine the actual oven temperature and cycles the heating elements on and off to maintain the set temperature.
This is one of the most straightforward appliance repairs: a $15-25 part, accessed from inside the oven, requiring only a Phillips screwdriver, and takes under 10 minutes.
The 1080-Ohm Test
Every Whirlpool oven sensor should read approximately 1080 ohms at room temperature (77 degrees F). This is the standard for all Whirlpool/Maytag/KitchenAid/Amana ovens — the resistance increases about 2 ohms for every degree F rise in temperature.
Testing:
- Disconnect power
- Remove the oven racks
- Locate the sensor — a thin metal probe (about 6-8 inches long) extending from the top rear wall of the oven cavity, held by 1-2 screws
- Disconnect the wire connector (accessible through the rear of the oven or behind the rear panel)
- Measure resistance across the 2 sensor leads:
- ~1080 ohms at room temp = sensor is good. Problem is elsewhere (board or element).
- Significantly off (below 900 or above 1300 at room temp) = sensor is drifted. Replace.
- Open circuit (infinite) = sensor is broken. Replace. Triggers F3 error code.
- Near zero = sensor is shorted. Replace. Triggers F4 error code.

Symptoms
- F3 error code — sensor circuit open. Sensor probe has broken internally.
- F4 error code — sensor circuit shorted. Sensor has internal short.
- Oven runs too hot — sensor reads lower than actual temperature, so the board keeps heating. Burned food on the correct setting.
- Oven runs too cold — sensor reads higher than actual temperature, so the board shuts the element off early. Undercooked food.
- Oven temperature fluctuates wildly — sensor has an intermittent connection. Temperature swings 50+ degrees during a cycle.

Replacement Steps
- Disconnect power
- Remove oven racks for access
- Remove the 1-2 screws holding the sensor to the rear oven wall (inside the cavity)
- Gently pull the sensor probe out — the wire connector is behind the rear wall
- Disconnect the wire connector
- Connect the new sensor's wire connector
- Feed the new probe through the hole in the rear wall
- Secure with mounting screw(s)
- Replace racks, restore power, and test by preheating to 350 degrees F
- Verify with an oven thermometer — the oven should hold within 25 degrees F of the set temperature
Oven Temperature Calibration
If the oven temperature is off by a consistent amount (always 15 degrees high or 20 degrees low), you can calibrate the offset in the control board settings before replacing the sensor:
- Press and hold the BAKE button for 5 seconds (or check your manual for the calibration procedure)
- Adjust in 5-degree increments up to +/- 35 degrees F
- If the offset needed is beyond 35 degrees F, the sensor has drifted too far — replace it

Common Mistakes
- Replacing the control board for F3/F4 codes — the sensor ($15-25) causes these codes, not the board ($100-350). Always test the sensor first.
- Not checking wire connections — the connector behind the rear wall can corrode. Clean or replace the connector before condemning the sensor
- Bending the sensor probe — the probe should be straight and extend fully into the oven cavity. A bent probe can contact the oven wall and give false readings
Lifespan
Oven temperature sensors last 10-20+ years. They have no moving parts and operate well within their rated temperature range during normal baking. Self-clean cycles stress them more but rarely cause direct failure. The most common failure mode is a broken internal wire connection from thermal expansion/contraction cycles.

FAQ
How do I know if my oven temperature is inaccurate?
Place an oven thermometer (available at any kitchen store for $5-10) on the center rack. Set the oven to 350 degrees F. After 30 minutes, the thermometer should read 325-375 degrees F. Consistently outside this range suggests a sensor issue.
Can a bad sensor cause the oven to overheat dangerously?
The high-limit thermostat provides a safety backup — it cuts power if the oven exceeds approximately 650 degrees F regardless of what the sensor reports. So a failed sensor can cause overheating, but the thermostat prevents dangerous temperatures.
Is the oven sensor the same as the meat probe?
No. The oven sensor measures air temperature inside the cavity. The meat probe (if your model has one) measures the internal temperature of food. Different parts, different connectors, different replacements.
