Whirlpool Oven Burning Smell: What's Causing It

Sort the smell by type#

The kind of smell tells you where to look:

• Food or smoke smell. Grease or a spill on the hidden bake element or the oven floor burns off as acrid smoke. The commonest cause by far.
• A new-oven chemical smell. A Whirlpool WFE or WFG range fresh from the box gives off a curing odour from the insulation and element coatings for the first few uses; running it empty at a moderate temperature with the kitchen ventilated clears it.
• Burning plastic. Packaging, a foil liner, or a plastic utensil left in the cavity melts onto a hot surface. Remove it and air the oven out.
• An electrical or hot-wiring smell. A scorched connector at the element or a failing component smells sharp and hot; this is the one to take seriously.

Clean out the obvious first#

Let the oven cool, then pull the racks and any foil, wipe up spills on the floor and around the hidden bake element, and check nothing has been left inside. On the AccuBake system the element sits under a floor panel, so lift it to reach a spill that has dripped through. Running a short bake after cleaning should come up odour-free.

When it is electrical#

If the smell is sharp and electrical rather than food or curing — and especially if it comes with a fault code or visible scorching at a connector — switch the oven off at the breaker and stop using it. A burnt element terminal or a failing board is a fire risk on a 240-volt circuit and needs a technician.

Before the holiday cooking season#

The first big bake of the season is a bad time to discover a smoking oven. Clean out spills and check for stray packaging now, and do the empty burn-off early if the oven is new, so it is ready and odour-free for the holiday cooking. If the smell is electrical or comes with a code, book a visit and a technician will check the element and wiring.
