The gasket is checked before either, because a seal that no longer closes loses heat continuously.

The limit depends on the fuel. Gas work ends at the supply connection, since a leak rather than a poor repair is what is at stake. Electric work ends at the element circuit, which is 240 volts and stays live at the rear terminals while the appliance has power, so the breaker comes off first.
