Which panel you take off depends on the component you are after. These are the access points an oven repair reaches for, most-used first:

What Makes a Whirlpool Teardown Different#
The signature of this teardown is that it wants two driver families. A 1/4" hex nut driver handles the sheet-metal fasteners; a Torx T20 handles the rest. Bringing one and not the other is the most common way an oven job stops halfway with the appliance already open.
Why two families, and why guessing costs you#
The 1/4 inch hex is the ordinary appliance sheet-metal head, and it is what holds panels to a frame. Torx turns up where a manufacturer wants a fastener driven to a consistent torque and not casually removed, and T20 is the size attested here. The two are not interchangeable in either direction. A Torx bit dropped into a hex socket has six points bearing on nothing; a hex driver on a Torx head bears on three of the six lobes and rounds them into a circle that no bit will grip afterwards.
That matters more on an oven than on most appliances because of where the fasteners are. Panels around a cooking cavity spend years through heat cycles, and a fastener that has been hot and cold a few thousand times does not always break loose at the first honest turn. When it finally moves, all the force you had been building goes somewhere — so it should be going through a driver that is fully engaged, not one that is about to slip out of a partly-rounded head with your knuckles behind it.
Take a moment before the first fastener to see which family you are looking at, and check both drivers are in reach. The awkward version of this job is the one where the top panel is off, the appliance is open on the floor, and the bit you need is in a drawer on the other side of the house.
The work gloves are equipment, not a suggestion#
Work gloves are on the tool list for a reason that becomes obvious the first time you handle a cut edge inside a cooking appliance. The interior faces of an oven's panels were never meant to be touched, and the frame behind them is unfinished. The gloves are also what let you keep a firm hold on a panel you are guiding rather than gripping — which matters, because on this appliance almost everything you are holding is heavier than it looks.
The interior comes out first, and that is not housekeeping#
"Empty the interior" is on the list of access routes rather than in a preamble, and it earns its place. Racks, shelves, drawers and bins are loose mass inside a cavity you are about to tip, lean into or lay over. They slide when the appliance moves, they take the enamel off each other and off the cavity, and they turn every subsequent lift into a two-handed job with something rattling. Take them out, put them somewhere they are not underfoot, and the rest of the work gets easier and quieter.

Go back out through the routes you came in by, and put the interior back last rather than first — racks and shelves in an empty cavity are only in the way while panels are still being handled.
The fasteners want the same discipline in both families. Start each one by hand, seat the driver fully before applying any turn, and stop at snug. Over-tightening a sheet-metal fastener into thin steel dimples the panel and pulls its edge out of line; over-tightening a Torx head is how you strip a lobe on the way in rather than on the way out, which is worse because you find out about it the next time somebody needs the panel off.
Anything freed at the control panel goes back by its latch and not by tugging on the harness behind it, and every wire returns to the path it was already lying in. On a cooking appliance a trapped harness is not just a chafe risk, because the space behind those panels gets hot in normal use — a wire pinched at a panel edge is being worked on by heat as well as by vibration.
Then the check that is specific to this appliance and cannot be skipped: before power goes anywhere near it, confirm the door hinges are in the state you found them in and both hinge locks are where they belong. A door that is back on but not properly latched at the hinge is the exact hazard the safety warning describes, and it will not look wrong from the front. Restore the breaker last, and give the appliance a normal run before you decide the job is done rather than deciding it when the last fastener goes in.
