Whirlpool Gas Oven Igniter Replacement — Flat vs Round Igniters, Glow Test & Gas Valve Sequence
The igniter in a Whirlpool gas oven is a hot surface igniter (HSI) that glows red-hot to ignite the gas flowing from the oven burner. It works on the same principle as a gas dryer igniter, but oven igniters are larger, draw more current, and must heat a bigger burner tube. The igniter is the single most commonly replaced part in gas ovens.
Whirlpool gas ovens have used two igniter shapes over the years:
Flat igniter (Norton style): A rectangular flat element mounted next to the burner tube. Most common in newer Whirlpool ranges. Fragile — cracks easily if bumped.
Round igniter (Carborundum style): A cylindrical element that inserts into a bracket near the burner. Found in older models. Slightly more durable but still fragile.
The Gas Safety Sequence
The igniter does not just ignite the gas — it is the key to the gas safety valve circuit:
- Board sends power to the igniter
- Igniter draws current and heats up
- As the igniter reaches operating temperature, its resistance drops and it draws more amperage (typically 3.2-3.6 amps)
- The gas safety valve has a bimetallic strip that opens only when enough current flows through the circuit — typically 3.2 amps minimum
- Valve opens, gas flows to the burner, igniter ignites the gas
- Flame sensor confirms ignition
A weak igniter glows visibly but does not draw enough current (below 3.2 amps) to open the gas valve. This is the classic failure: the igniter glows for 60-90 seconds, then the board gives up and shuts off the circuit. Cycle repeats every few minutes — you see the igniter glow but the oven never heats.

Testing
Amp draw test (most definitive): With the oven calling for heat, use a clamp-on ammeter on one of the igniter wires. If the draw is below 3.0-3.2 amps, the igniter is too weak to open the gas valve. Replace.
Resistance test: Disconnect power. Measure across igniter terminals. Flat igniters: 40-400 ohms normal. Open circuit = broken. A resistance test alone cannot detect a weak igniter — only the amp draw test can.
Visual test: Watch the igniter through the bottom oven vent or by removing the oven floor panel. A strong igniter glows bright orange-white within 60 seconds. A weak igniter glows dim orange and takes 90+ seconds.

Replacement Steps
- Turn off the gas supply to the oven and disconnect power
- Remove the oven racks and the oven floor panel (lifts out or has screws)
- The igniter is mounted next to the burner tube at the bottom of the oven cavity — held by 2 screws
- Disconnect the wire connector (it may be at the back of the oven — trace the wire)
- Remove the 2 mounting screws and gently slide the old igniter out. Do not bump the ceramic element.
- Position the new igniter with the glowing surface facing the gas burner ports
- Secure with mounting screws — do not over-tighten (ceramic cracks)
- Reconnect the wire connector
- Replace the oven floor panel and racks
- Turn on the gas supply, restore power, and test — the oven should ignite within 60-90 seconds
Handling Precautions
The silicon carbide or silicon nitride element is extremely fragile. Do not touch the glowing surface with bare hands (oils cause hot spots), do not set it down on a hard surface, and do not flex or bend the element. Handle only by the ceramic base or mounting bracket.

Common Mistakes
- Replacing the gas safety valve when the igniter is weak — the valve is a $60-150 part. The igniter is a $15-45 part and fails 10x more often. Always test/replace the igniter first.
- Not removing the oven floor panel — the igniter is visible but not accessible without removing the floor panel. Trying to reach it through the gap results in dropping screws into the burner area.
- Cracking the new igniter during installation — ceramic is fragile. Tighten screws gently.
Lifespan
Gas oven igniters last 3-8 years. They degrade gradually from thermal cycling — each ignition event stresses the ceramic element. The glow bar literally erodes with each use, drawing slightly less current each time until it can no longer open the gas valve.

FAQ
My gas oven igniter glows but the oven never heats — is it the igniter?
Yes, in approximately 90% of cases. A weak igniter glows visibly but cannot draw the 3.2+ amps needed to open the gas safety valve. Replacement is $15-45 and takes 15-20 minutes.
Can I smell gas when the igniter is working but not lighting?
No. The gas safety valve only opens when the igniter draws sufficient current. If you smell gas with a glowing igniter, the gas valve may be leaking — turn off the gas supply immediately and call a professional.
Do I need to relight a pilot light after replacing the igniter?
No. Whirlpool gas ovens use hot surface ignition, not a standing pilot light. There is nothing to relight.
