Whirlpool Dryer Error Code AF: Restricted Airflow — Vent System Diagnosis
AF is a standalone diagnostic code on Whirlpool dryers — it does not follow the F/E numbering convention used by electrical fault codes. AF stands for "Air Flow" and indicates the control board's airflow monitoring algorithm detected that exhaust airflow through the dryer is below the minimum threshold for safe operation. This is the most maintenance-related dryer code you can encounter — it usually means the vent system needs cleaning, not that a component has failed.
How Whirlpool Detects Restricted Airflow
The AccuDry system monitors airflow indirectly by comparing inlet and exhaust thermistor readings over time. The detection algorithm works as follows:
When airflow is normal, heated air passes through the drum quickly. The exhaust thermistor reads a specific temperature relationship to the inlet thermistor — typically 80-130 degrees F cooler than the inlet, depending on the load size and dampness level. When the vent is restricted, air moves slowly through the drum. The exhaust temperature rises abnormally close to the inlet temperature because the air spends more time in the heated environment.
The board tracks the ratio of inlet-to-exhaust temperature over a rolling 10-minute window. When the exhaust temperature exceeds 85% of the inlet temperature for more than 10 consecutive minutes (indicating very slow air movement), the board generates AF.
On newer W-series models (WED9620HC), an actual airflow pressure sensor in the blower housing provides a direct measurement. This sensor detects back-pressure increases from a restricted vent much faster and more accurately than the thermistor-ratio method.

The Five Levels of Vent Restriction
Level 1: Lint Screen Accumulation
The lint screen catches the majority of airborne lint during each cycle. A fully clogged lint screen reduces airflow by approximately 50% — enough to trigger AF on high-heat cycles but not necessarily on low or medium settings.
Check: Remove the lint screen and hold it up to light. If you cannot see light through it, the mesh is clogged with fine fibers that the roller cleaning method does not remove.
Fix: Wash the lint screen with warm soapy water, scrub with a soft brush, and allow to air dry completely. Dryer sheet residue creates an invisible waxy film that blocks fine mesh even when it appears clean.
Level 2: Lint Screen Housing Buildup
Behind the lint screen sits a housing channel that directs air from the drum to the blower. Lint that slips past the screen edge accumulates in this channel over years, forming a compressed mat.
Check: Remove the lint screen. Use a flashlight to look down the housing slot. Use a vacuum with a crevice attachment to reach into the housing.
Fix: Vacuum the lint screen housing thoroughly. A specialized dryer vent brush kit (long flexible brush) reaches deeper than the crevice tool alone.
Level 3: Internal Duct Lint Accumulation
Between the blower and the exterior vent connection, a short section of duct runs through the dryer chassis. This section accumulates lint that passes the blower — particularly fine, compressed lint that adheres to duct surfaces.
Check: Disconnect the dryer from the wall vent duct. Look into the dryer's exhaust port with a flashlight. Lint buildup on internal duct walls is visible as a grey/white coating.
Fix: Disconnect the dryer from the wall vent. Use a vent brush kit or shop vacuum to clean the internal duct from the exhaust port.
Level 4: Wall Vent Duct Obstruction
The duct running from behind the dryer through the wall to the exterior vent cap accumulates lint over years. Long runs (over 15 feet), duct with multiple elbows, and flexible foil duct (which traps lint in its ridges) are especially prone to blockage.
Check: Disconnect the duct from the dryer. Run the dryer empty for 2 minutes. If exhaust air from the dryer's port feels strong but the wall vent cap has weak or no output, the wall duct is obstructed.
Fix: Professional vent cleaning service ($100-$200) uses rotating brushes and compressed air to clear the entire duct run. For accessible ducts, a DIY dryer vent cleaning kit ($20-$40) with flexible rods can reach 15-25 feet.
Level 5: Exterior Vent Cap Blockage
Bird nests, wasp nests, snow/ice buildup, or a stuck flapper valve on the exterior vent cap can completely block exhaust flow even with a clean duct system.
Check: Go outside and locate the vent cap. Verify the flapper moves freely and the opening is clear. With the dryer running, you should feel strong warm airflow at the cap.
Fix: Clear obstructions. Replace the cap if the flapper is bent or corroded.
When AF Is Not a Vent Problem
In approximately 10% of AF cases, the vent system is clean but AF persists. These component failures mimic restricted airflow:
Blower wheel failure: The blower fan that pushes air through the duct can lose a blade, crack, or come loose on its shaft. A damaged blower moves insufficient air even through a clean vent. Listen for unusual sounds from the blower housing during operation — rattling, scraping, or a higher-pitched whine.
Blower wheel lint wrapping: Heavy lint or thread wraps around the blower shaft, slowing the fan. This is common in households with pets (hair wraps tightly) or heavy towel users (terry cloth fibers are longer and more likely to wrap).
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Cost of Ignoring AF
AF is a warning, not an emergency shutdown. The dryer will continue to operate with AF displayed. However, restricted airflow has serious consequences:
- Fire hazard: Lint is highly flammable. According to NFPA, clothes dryers cause an estimated 14,630 home structure fires per year. Restricted vents are the leading cause
- Accelerated component failure: Overheating from restricted airflow shortens the life of thermistors, the heating element, and the thermal fuse. A $150 vent cleaning prevents $200-$400 in premature component replacements
- Energy waste: A restricted dryer runs 30-50% longer per load, adding $10-$25 per month in electricity or gas costs
- Clothing damage: Extended high-heat exposure fades colors, shrinks fabrics, and weakens fibers
The Real Cost of DIY

Repair vs. Maintenance Cost
| Action | Cost | What It Prevents |
|---|---|---|
| DIY vent cleaning | $0-$40 (brush kit) | AF code, fire hazard, component failure |
| Professional vent cleaning | $100-$200 | Same, with verification of entire vent path |
| Blower wheel replacement (if needed) | $15-$45 DIY / $100-$200 professional | Insufficient airflow despite clean vent |
Recommended interval: Clean the full vent path annually. Clean the lint screen housing quarterly. Clean the lint screen after every load.

Repair vs. Replace Decision for AF
The repair-versus-replace threshold for appliances is generally accepted at 50% of replacement cost. For AF on Whirlpool dryer, evaluate:
- Repair cost: See the parts and pricing table above
- Replacement cost: Check current Whirlpool dryer pricing ($500-$2,500 depending on model tier)
- Machine age: Under 5 years — always repair. 5-8 years — repair if under 40% of replacement cost. Over 8 years — repair only if the machine is otherwise in good condition with no other active faults
A single-point component failure at mid-life does not indicate overall appliance decline. The remaining systems continue to function normally and have independent lifespans.
Preventing Recurrence
After resolving AF, reduce the likelihood of repeat failure through targeted maintenance:
- Power quality: Install surge protection on the appliance circuit. Voltage spikes are the primary external cause of control board failures across all appliance types
- Moisture management: Ensure the installation area has adequate ventilation. High humidity accelerates connector corrosion and board-level degradation
- Regular maintenance: Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule for your specific model. Preventive maintenance typically extends appliance life by 2-4 years
- Prompt code attention: Address error codes when they first appear rather than ignoring intermittent occurrences. Early-stage faults are typically cheaper to repair and less likely to cause cascading damage to connected systems
Is It Worth Your Time?
A dryer not heating could be the element, thermal fuse, gas valve, igniter, or timer. Average DIY diagnosis: 3-4 hours with no guarantee of finding the issue. Our technician diagnoses the issue in about 30 minutes — same-day appointments available.

Warranty Information
Whirlpool standard warranty covers 1 year of parts and labor from the original purchase date. Contact warranty service at 1-800-253-1301 with your complete model number and serial number (found on the data plate — location varies by appliance type: inside the door, on the rear panel, or on the control panel edge).
Extended protection plans purchased through retailers (typically 3-5 years) cover AF as a standard electrical or mechanical failure. File claims through the plan provider, not Whirlpool directly.
Professional repair companies typically warranty their work for 90 days to 1 year. If AF returns within the warranty period, the return visit should be free.
Your right to perform DIY repairs is protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act — self-repair does not void the manufacturer warranty on unaffected components. However, damage caused by improper repair is excluded from coverage.
