Cove Dishwasher E3: Fill Timeout — Water Not Entering the Tub
E3 on a Cove dishwasher means the tub did not reach the required water level within the fill timeout period. The control board opened the inlet valve but after approximately 4-5 minutes, the water level sensor has not confirmed adequate fill. The machine cannot wash without water and stops with E3.
Water Supply Chain for Cove Dishwashers
The fill system consists of:
- Household supply valve (under the sink, manually operated)
- Braided supply hose (from valve to dishwasher inlet)
- Solenoid inlet valve (electrically controlled by the board)
- Fill path (water enters the tub through an internal channel)
- Level sensor (confirms adequate water depth for washing)
E3 means water did not arrive at the level sensor within the expected time. The break in the chain can be at any point.

Diagnosis by Priority
1. Supply valve closed (30% of cases). The most common and simplest cause. The hot water supply valve under the sink was turned off (during plumbing work, by accident, or the valve handle was bumped). Check and open fully. Cove dishwashers typically connect to the hot water supply for energy efficiency.
2. Kinked supply hose (20%). The braided stainless supply hose can kink where it exits the valve or where it connects to the dishwasher inlet (often pressed against the cabinet side when the unit was pushed in after installation or service). Pull the unit out slightly and check the entire hose run.
3. Inlet valve failure (20%). The solenoid valve inside the dishwasher is not opening when commanded. Test: start a cycle and listen at the lower front of the unit — you should hear a click (valve opening) followed by the sound of water flowing. If click but no water = valve mechanically stuck. No click = valve not receiving power (board relay or wiring issue).
Measure valve solenoid resistance: expect 300-1,000 ohms. Open circuit = coil burned. Test valve independently by applying 120V to solenoid terminals (with water supply connected) — if water flows, valve is functional and the issue is upstream (board).
4. Clogged inlet screen (15%). A small mesh screen at the valve inlet catches sediment from the supply line. Sacramento's moderate-to-hard water (7-12 grains/gallon) deposits minerals that clog this screen over 3-5 years. Remove the supply hose from the valve and inspect/clean the screen with vinegar.
5. Low water pressure (10%). Cove dishwashers require minimum 20 PSI dynamic pressure. If multiple fixtures are running simultaneously (irrigation system, washing machine filling), the dishwasher may receive insufficient pressure for adequate fill rate. The fill would eventually complete but exceeds the timeout.
6. Level sensor failure (5%). The sensor confirms fill completion. If it fails in the "empty" position, the board thinks the tub never fills even though water is entering. Open the dishwasher mid-cycle (after timeout) — if you see water in the tub but E3 displayed, the level sensor is suspect.
The Cove Diagnostic Mode
Enter Cove diagnostic mode by pressing and holding the appropriate control sequence (varies by model year — consult the owner's manual). In diagnostic mode, you can manually command the fill valve to open, allowing you to observe whether water enters the tub when the valve is energized by the board.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

E3 After Moving or Installation
If E3 appeared after moving the dishwasher (for flooring work, plumbing access, etc.), the supply hose was likely kinked when the unit was pushed back into position, or the supply valve was closed during the work and not reopened. This accounts for a significant portion of E3 calls — always verify the supply valve first.

FAQ
Q: E3 and the dishwasher is bone dry inside. Is that different from E3 with some water? A: Bone dry = no water entered at all (supply valve closed, hose completely kinked, or inlet valve not opening). Some water but not enough = partial flow (clogged screen, low pressure, or very kinked hose allowing some flow). The diagnostic path differs: bone dry points to complete obstruction, partial water points to restricted flow.
Q: My Cove sometimes fills fine and sometimes shows E3. Intermittent cause? A: Intermittent E3 is often pressure-related — the dishwasher fills successfully when no other water fixtures are active, but times out when the washing machine, irrigation, or showers are competing for pressure. Check dynamic pressure at the dishwasher supply with other fixtures running.
Q: Can E3 damage the dishwasher? A: No. E3 is protective — it prevents the wash pump from running dry (which would damage pump seals). The machine simply waits for water and stops when it does not arrive.
Q: Should I connect my Cove to hot or cold water supply? A: Cove recommends hot water supply (120-140 degrees F from your water heater). Hot water improves cleaning performance and reduces the energy needed for the internal heater to reach sanitization temperature. Connect to the hot water valve under the sink, not cold.
