Cove Dishwasher E2: Drain Failure — Water Not Evacuating
E2 on a Cove dishwasher means the drain pump ran for its maximum allotted time but the tub did not reach the empty-level threshold. Water remains in the dishwasher at the end of a drain cycle. The Cove will not proceed to the next fill/wash phase with standing water and locks out with E2.
How Cove Draining Works
The Cove dishwasher uses a dedicated drain pump (separate from the wash pump) that activates during drain phases. The drain pump pushes water through the drain hose to either a garbage disposer connection or an air gap fitting mounted on the sink deck. A check valve prevents backflow.
The control board allows approximately 2-3 minutes for the tub to drain completely. A flow sensor or turbidity sensor at the tub bottom confirms water has been evacuated. If the sensor still detects water after the timeout, E2 triggers.

Common Causes
Drain hose blockage or kink (35%). The most common cause and easiest to fix. The drain hose routes from the pump outlet, through the cabinet side, and up to the air gap or disposer. Kinks in this hose (especially where it exits the dishwasher cabinet or where it loops upward for the high-loop installation) restrict or block flow.
Garbage disposer knockout plug (20%). On new installations, the knockout plug inside the disposer's dishwasher inlet must be punched out before connecting the drain hose. If the installer forgot, the drain hose connects to a sealed opening — water has nowhere to go. This is exclusively a new-installation issue.
Drain pump failure (15%). The drain pump motor has seized or its impeller has broken. The motor may hum without moving water, or it may be completely silent. Test by listening during a drain command in diagnostic mode.
Food debris in the filter system (15%). Cove dishwashers have a multi-stage filter (coarse + fine mesh) at the tub bottom that prevents food from reaching the drain pump. If severely clogged, water cannot reach the pump intake. Remove and clean both filter stages.
Air gap blockage (10%). If your installation uses a countertop air gap (the chrome fitting on the sink deck), debris accumulates inside it over time. Remove the cap, inspect the internal chamber, and clean with a brush.
Check valve failure (5%). The one-way check valve in the drain line prevents dirty water from flowing back into the tub. If this valve is stuck closed (rather than stuck open, which would cause other issues), it blocks drainage. Located either at the pump outlet or inline in the drain hose.
Diagnosis
Step 1: Check for obvious blockage. Open the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack. Pull out the filter assembly (twist-and-lift on Cove models). Clean if any debris is present. Check the tub bottom for standing water — if several inches remain, there is definitely a drain issue.
Step 2: Drain hose inspection. Pull the dishwasher out (after disconnecting power and supply). Trace the drain hose from pump to disposer/air gap. Check for kinks, especially at the cabinet exit and the high-loop point. Disconnect at the disposer end and check for blockage.
Step 3: Manual drain test. With the hose disconnected from the disposer, hold the end into a bucket (below tub level). Does water drain by gravity? If yes, the pump and hose are clear — the blockage is at the disposer connection or air gap. If no gravity drain, there is a blockage between the tub and the hose end.
Step 4: Pump test. In diagnostic mode, command a drain cycle. Listen at the pump — it should produce a steady hum/whir. Complete silence = motor failure. Humming but no water movement = seized impeller or disconnected impeller.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

The High-Loop vs Air Gap Question
Plumbing code in California requires either an air gap fitting or a high-loop installation for dishwasher drains. The high-loop (drain hose routed to the highest point under the counter before descending to the disposer) prevents backflow but can trap debris at the apex. If your Cove uses a high-loop, check the loop apex for accumulation.

Prevention
Rinse dishes before loading (Cove handles food residue but heavy debris clogs the filter faster). Clean the filter assembly monthly — remove, rinse under running water, and reinstall. Check the drain hose routing annually for kinks that may develop as the unit settles or shifts.
FAQ
Q: E2 appeared and there is foul-smelling water in the tub. What happened? A: Stagnant water in a dishwasher develops odor within 24-48 hours. The E2 prevented the cycle from completing, and the standing water has gone stagnant. Drain manually (remove the filter and soak up water with towels, or use a wet-dry vacuum), then address the drain blockage.
Q: I just had my garbage disposer replaced and now E2 appears. Connection? A: Almost certainly the knockout plug. New disposers ship with the dishwasher inlet sealed. The plumber must punch out the knockout before connecting the drain hose. This is the most common installation-related E2 cause.
Q: E2 appeared mid-cycle. Is the food in the dishwasher still dirty? A: Yes, likely. E2 interrupts the cycle before completion. The dishes may have been partially washed but were not rinsed or sanitized. Re-run a full cycle after resolving the drain issue.
Q: Can I use my Cove as a drying rack while E2 is active (no water cycles)? A: The Cove will not accept any cycle commands while E2 is active. Clear the standing water, fix the drain issue, and reset the error before the unit accepts any operations.

Drain System Testing for E2
E2 diagnosis targets the drain pathway specifically. With the Cove dishwasher running a drain cycle, listen at the base of the machine for the drain pump motor. A steady hum confirms the pump motor is running. Silence means the pump motor is not energizing — check the pump connector and wiring, or the pump motor winding may have failed (test resistance with a multimeter: expect 50-200 ohms for a healthy pump motor).
If the pump motor runs but water does not exit: check the drain hose for kinks, verify the high loop or air gap is properly configured, and ensure the garbage disposal knockout plug was removed if the dishwasher drains through a disposal.
The Cove's drain pump can be tested independently by applying 120VAC directly to the pump terminals (with appropriate safety precautions and the pump disconnected from the machine wiring). If the pump runs on direct power but not through the machine, the control board's drain relay may have failed.
For E2 that appears only with heavy loads: the increased water volume may exceed the drain pump's capacity within the timeout if the drain path has a partial restriction. Clean the entire path from pump to drain connection.
