Maytag Dishwasher F5 E1: Door Latch Switch Not Detecting Closed Position
F5 E1 means the control board does not detect the door as fully latched. The dishwasher will not fill or start any cycle phase until the latch switch confirms a sealed door. Unlike washers (where door lock is a safety mechanism for spinning), dishwasher door latch prevents water spray from escaping the tub during operation.
Latch Mechanism Components
The Maytag dishwasher door latch has three parts:
- Handle mechanism — the lever you pull to open the door. It actuates the latch hook.
- Latch hook — engages a strike plate on the tub frame. Physical closure.
- Latch switch — a micro-switch activated by the hook when it reaches full engagement. Electrical confirmation sent to the control board.
F5 E1 means part #3 (the switch) never closes. The door may feel latched (hook engaged) but the switch is not confirming it.

Most Common Causes
1. Worn Latch Switch Contacts (35% of Cases)
The micro-switch contacts wear from thousands of actuations. The switch clicks but does not make electrical contact.
Test: With the door open and the dishwasher unplugged, manually push the latch hook to its fully-closed position using your finger. Measure continuity across the latch switch terminals — should read 0 ohms when the hook is fully engaged. Infinite resistance confirms worn contacts.
2. Misaligned Strike Plate (30% of Cases)
The strike plate on the tub frame shifts over time or after the dishwasher is reinstalled. The hook enters the plate but does not push far enough to trip the switch.
Fix: Loosen the two mounting screws on the strike plate. Close the door firmly. Tighten screws while the door is fully closed — this centers the plate on the hook for maximum engagement.
3. Bent or Worn Latch Hook (20% of Cases)
The hook bends from door slamming or from a warped door panel. A bent hook cannot reach full travel into the strike plate.
4. Control Board Input Failure (15% of Cases)
The board's input circuit for the latch switch can fail. If a new switch still produces F5 E1, the board is not reading the input.
Replacement
Latch assembly: WPW10275768, $15-35. The latch mounts on the inside of the door with 2-4 screws. Disconnect the wire connector, swap the assembly, reconnect.
Door strike adjustment: $0 (screwdriver only).
