What Makes a Maytag Teardown Different#
The plastic spudger is what the evidence names as this brand's distinguishing tool, and a trim removal tool on a parts list is never decoration. It is only ever there because something is held by clips rather than by fasteners. Read that alongside the routes into this machine — one of which is freeing the control panel — and the inference is straightforward: at least one panel on this cabinet does not come off by undoing screws, and there is a correct tool for it.
That makes this the one dishwasher in the batch where "which of my two prying tools is right for this" is a genuine question. Working at one corner until something gives is how a clip snaps — and a broken retaining clip is the kind of damage that shows up later as a panel that will not sit flush and rattles through every cycle.
The rest of the list still has to be respected on its own terms. Three drive types appear here — the star recess for the Torx bit, plain hexagonal heads for the nut driver and cross recesses for the Phillips — and each engages a fastener the other two will damage. A Phillips pressed into a star recess sits high, cams out and shears the points off the star; a flat blade used on a hexagonal head bites two corners and rounds them past the point where the correct driver holds. Look at the recess, then pick the tool.
The one thing to keep straight through the whole job is which mechanism you are dealing with at any moment. A clipped panel and a fastened panel feel identical until you have found every fastener, and the failure mode differs sharply: forcing a fastened panel bends metal, while unscrewing at a clipped one achieves nothing and leaves you convinced a screw is hidden somewhere. If a panel has no visible fasteners and gives slightly along its edge, that is the spudger's job. If it is solid and does not move at all, there is a fastener you have not found.

Clips have to be re-engaged deliberately, and that is the part of this reassembly people get wrong. A clipped panel pressed home at one corner can look seated while two of its clips are sitting alongside their catches rather than in them. Line the panel up along its whole seam first, then press it in evenly. You are listening as much as looking — each clip announces itself, and a panel that goes on in silence has probably not gone on at all.
A clip that broke on the way out does not become sound because the panel sits flat. It will vibrate, and a dishwasher runs long cycles with a pump in it, so a loose panel finds every resonance in the machine. If a clip is broken, treat it as a part that needs replacing rather than as something to work around with tape.
The screwed panels bring the more familiar hazard. A nut driver hands you plenty of torque and almost no feedback, so a fastener seats and then keeps turning while your hand notices nothing; the thread pulls out of the sheet metal and no further tightening recovers it. Snug is the target for every one of them. Keep the three drive types separated by the panel they came off, because a star-drive screw pushed into a hex hole strips the hole rather than the screw, and the hole belongs to the cabinet.
Support the door through any job that touches it. The counterbalance spring is sized for a complete door, so a partly assembled one is lighter than the spring is expecting and can travel faster than you intend in either direction. Keep a hand on it rather than finding out.
Restore water before power. Open the supply valve with the breaker still off, then look at the fitting and the hose run under real pressure while the machine is still out where you can see it — a seep declares itself immediately. Power goes on last, and the machine goes back slowly with the hose and cable watched the whole way in.
When to Stop and Call a Technician#
Stop at any melted or scorched wiring — that is an electrical fault to diagnose, not an access problem to work around. That applies with particular force behind the control panel, which is exactly where the trim tool takes you: browned insulation or a heat-distorted connector on the interface harness is a fault to be found, not a panel to be refitted over.
