Know your LG interior coating first#

LG ranges use different interior finishes depending on the model and year, and each corrodes differently. EasyClean is a durable blue-gray catalytic enamel on most current models that still chips from impact. Porcelain enamel on older units is a glass-like coating that is more brittle and rusts rapidly once chipped. Stainless panels — often the rear wall behind the convection fan — resist rust but can still surface-corrode from acidic food or harsh cleaners.

Identifying the finish matters because the repair and prevention differ: a chip in porcelain needs sealing before rust spreads, while a stainless streak may only need the right cleaner. Self-clean heat is the accelerant across all of them, burning through any already-weakened enamel far faster than normal cooking temperatures.

It also helps to separate cosmetic rust from structural rust. Surface bloom on the cavity floor is unsightly but harmless and wipes or seals away, whereas corrosion that has thinned an element mount or the door frame is a safety and integrity concern. Sorting the two decides whether you are looking at a ten-minute clean-and-seal or a real repair, so inspect the mounts and door before assuming the whole interior is failing.
