Why some LG boards cost more#
Not all LG boards are priced alike. Standard LG ranges use a straightforward board, but models with ProBake convection run a more complex — and more expensive — board to drive that system. On a mid-life standard LG the board is usually an easy repair; on an older ProBake model the higher board price can push a borderline case toward replacement.
Is it the board or just the touchpad?#
Before you buy a board, find out whether you even need one. On some LG models the touchpad membrane and the control board are separate parts. If the buttons are unresponsive but the display still works, the touchpad overlay is the likely culprit and is cheaper to replace than the whole board. If the display itself is dead or garbled, the board is the more probable fault. Sorting that out first can turn a board-sized bill into a touchpad-sized one.
Read the F9 code correctly#
An F9 on an LG oven means it failed to ignite on gas models or failed to reach temperature on electric ones — and it is not automatically a board problem. On a gas range the igniter is the usual cause; on an electric range a failed bake element or temperature sensor is more likely than the board. Chasing the actual cause of F9 before condemning the board prevents an expensive swap that does not fix the symptom.
What the quote leaves out#
The board price is not the whole cost of either path. A new range means delivery, haul-away, and possible cabinet or electrical adjustments for a different body. Genuine LG parts run 10 to 30% above generic equivalents but fit correctly and keep any coverage intact. And if a surge killed the board, a surge protector belongs in the same visit so the replacement is not on the same road.
Standard versus ProBake changes the call#
Because an LG's board price swings with the model, the repair decision is really two decisions. On a standard mid-range LG, the board is affordable enough that repair wins well into the range's life. On a ProBake convection model, the pricier board can push an older oven past the 50% line sooner, so an eight-to-ten-year-old ProBake with a failed board is a closer call than the same age on a basic model. Identify which you own before you judge the quote, and weigh an aftermarket board against the OEM price if the LG-branded part runs high.
