LG Gas Oven Igniter Replacement — The Most Common Gas Oven Repair
The igniter is the single most-replaced component in LG gas ovens. It is a silicon carbide hot surface igniter (HSI) that must glow to over 2,500F to trigger the gas safety valve. When the igniter weakens with age, the oven either does not heat at all or takes excessively long to preheat — sometimes 30-45 minutes to reach 350F.
This guide applies to LG gas ovens and ranges (LRG, LSG prefix models). Electric LG ovens use heating elements instead.
How Gas Oven Ignition Works
The gas oven ignition sequence is identical in concept to the gas dryer but operates at higher power levels:
- You select a temperature — the board sends 120V to the igniter
- The igniter heats up and begins glowing bright orange
- As it reaches full temperature, the igniter draws 3.2-3.6 amps
- The bi-metal strip in the gas safety valve responds to the heat from the igniter (the valve is positioned adjacent to the igniter) and opens the gas flow
- Gas ignites from the glowing igniter
- The oven heats to the set temperature
The critical specification is amp draw. A new LG oven igniter draws approximately 3.5 amps. As the silicon carbide degrades with use, amp draw decreases. Below approximately 3.2 amps, the gas valve cannot open. The igniter glows (sometimes dimly) but no gas flows.

Symptoms
- Oven does not heat but the igniter glows weakly — igniter too weak to trigger gas valve
- Oven takes 30+ minutes to preheat — igniter is marginal, sometimes reaching threshold amps and sometimes not
- Gas smell without ignition — very rare and indicates a gas valve problem, not an igniter problem. Shut off gas immediately.
- Igniter does not glow at all — igniter element has cracked or wiring is disconnected
- Oven heats intermittently — igniter is on the borderline of the amp threshold
Part Numbers and Pricing
| Part | LG Number | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Flat igniter (standard) | MEE61841401 | $25-$80 |
| Round igniter (older models) | MEE61841301 | $20-$65 |
| Gas safety valve | Varies by model | $80-$200 |
| Professional replacement | — | $100-$180 |
The igniter is far cheaper than the gas valve. Always replace the igniter first — it accounts for 90%+ of gas oven no-heat problems.

Testing the Igniter
The most reliable test is an amp draw measurement. Set your multimeter to AC amps. Connect it in series with one of the igniter wires. Turn on the oven. The igniter should draw 3.2-3.6 amps within 60-90 seconds. Below 3.0 amps, replace it. If you do not have an amp clamp, test resistance — expect 40-400 ohms. Infinite = cracked element.

Replacement Steps
Shut off gas supply. Disconnect power. Remove the oven racks and the oven floor panel (2-4 Phillips screws). The igniter is mounted next to the burner tube in the bottom of the oven.
Disconnect the igniter wire connector (usually behind the broil burner area or accessible from the back of the oven). Remove the 2 mounting screws. Slide the old igniter out.
Handle the new igniter by the ceramic base only. Slide it into position next to the burner ports. Secure with mounting screws. Reconnect the wire harness.
Turn on gas, restore power, and set the oven to 350F. The igniter should glow and gas should ignite within 60-90 seconds. Monitor the flame — it should be blue with slight yellow tips.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG gas oven igniter glows but the oven does not heat. Is the igniter bad?
Almost certainly. A glowing igniter that does not ignite gas is too weak to trigger the safety valve. The igniter still glows visually but does not draw enough amperage. Replace it ($25-$80).
How long do LG gas oven igniters last?
Typically 5-8 years with regular use. The silicon carbide degrades with each heating cycle. Heavy oven users may need replacement every 3-4 years.
Can a bad igniter cause a gas leak?
No. The gas safety valve will not open unless the igniter draws sufficient current. A weak or dead igniter keeps the gas valve closed. Gas smell from a non-heating oven is extremely rare and indicates a valve problem — shut off gas immediately and call a professional.
