LG Oven Door Gasket Replacement — Stopping Heat Leaks
The door gasket on an LG oven is a braided fiberglass rope that runs around the oven door frame, creating a seal between the door and the cabinet. Unlike a washer or dishwasher rubber gasket, this seal must withstand temperatures up to 500F during normal baking and 900F+ during self-clean. When the gasket deteriorates, heat escapes around the door, the oven struggles to maintain temperature, and the outer surfaces get dangerously hot.
How to Test for a Bad Gasket
Preheat the oven to 400F. Hold your hand 2-3 inches from the door edge and move it around the perimeter. You should feel minimal heat. If there are hot spots — places where significantly more heat radiates — the gasket has a gap or has compressed at that point.
Another test: place a piece of paper between the door and the gasket, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. It should resist with moderate tension along the entire perimeter. If the paper slides out easily at any point, the gasket is compressed or missing at that location.

Symptoms
- Oven takes longer to preheat or cannot reach set temperature
- Outer door or side panels are excessively hot during baking
- Visible gaps between the door and the cabinet frame
- The gasket is frayed, hardened, or falling out of its channel
- Smoke escapes from around the door during high-temperature cooking
- Uneven baking — the side near the leak runs cooler

Tools Required
- Flathead screwdriver — for prying the old gasket out of clips or channel
- Pliers — for removing retaining clips
- High-temperature RTV silicone (if needed) — for gaskets that glue rather than clip in place
Replacement Steps
No need to disconnect power for this repair — you are working on the door exterior only.
Open the oven door fully. Starting at one corner, pull the old gasket out of its retaining channel or clips. Note how it is held — LG ovens use either metal clips every 4-6 inches or a friction-fit channel around the door frame.
Clean the channel or clip area with a damp cloth. If the old gasket was glued, scrape any remaining adhesive.
Start installing the new gasket at the top center. Press it firmly into each clip or into the channel, working your way around the perimeter. The ends should meet at the bottom center of the door. Trim any excess with scissors. If the gasket does not clip in securely, a small dot of high-temperature RTV silicone at each clip point provides additional hold.
Close the door and check for uniform compression around the entire perimeter.

Gasket Materials
LG oven gaskets are braided fiberglass rope — they look and feel like a thick woven cord. Do not substitute with rubber gasket material from other appliances. Rubber cannot withstand oven temperatures and will melt or burn. The fiberglass material withstands 1,000F+ and maintains its resilience through thousands of thermal cycles.
Lifespan
Oven gaskets typically last 10-15 years. Self-clean cycles accelerate degradation because the extreme temperatures cause the fiberglass to become brittle faster. If you use self-clean frequently, inspect the gasket annually and plan to replace it every 6-8 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG oven outer door is very hot during baking. Is the gasket bad?
Possibly. Do the hand test around the door perimeter at 400F. Hot spots indicate gasket gaps. Also check the outer door glass and insulation — a cracked inner glass panel allows heat to reach the outer panel.
Can I use generic oven gasket rope from a hardware store?
Yes, if it is fiberglass rated for oven temperatures and matches the diameter and length of the original. Do not use rubber, foam, or non-rated materials.
How does a bad gasket affect baking performance?
Heat escapes from the gap, creating a cool zone inside the oven near the leak. The oven compensates by running the element longer, but the temperature distribution remains uneven. Food on the leak side cooks slower.
