LG Oven Convection Fan Replacement — When Convection Baking Fails
LG ovens with convection capability use a fan mounted behind the rear wall of the oven cavity to circulate hot air around food. This is different from the cooling fan that blows room-temperature air across the control panel to protect electronics. Replacing the wrong fan wastes money and time.
Convection Fan vs Cooling Fan
Convection fan: Inside the oven cavity behind the rear panel. Circulates heated air for even baking and faster cooking. Only runs when you select a Convection mode. When it fails, convection baking produces uneven results — the top or bottom of food cooks differently than expected.
Cooling fan: Outside the oven cavity, behind the control panel. Blows room air across the electronics during and after cooking to prevent heat damage. Runs automatically during any heating mode and continues for several minutes after the oven is turned off. When it fails, the control board overheats.
LG ProBake models have a rear-mounted bake element that works with the convection fan to provide bottom-up heat distribution. If the fan fails on a ProBake model, the rear element still produces heat but without air circulation, creating hot spots directly in front of the element.

Convection Fan Replacement
Disconnect power. Remove the oven racks. Remove the rear cavity panel (typically 6-8 screws — Phillips or Torx). The convection fan and motor are mounted behind this panel. Remove the fan blade retaining nut, pull the blade off the motor shaft. Disconnect the motor wire connector. Remove the motor mounting screws (2-3). Install the new motor, attach the blade, and reassemble.
Test by running a Convection Bake at 350F. You should hear the fan running and feel even air circulation when you open the door briefly.
The Real Cost of DIY

Fan Blade Inspection
Before replacing the motor, inspect the fan blade. A cracked or warped blade causes noise and vibration without necessarily indicating motor failure. If the blade is damaged but the motor spins freely and quietly by hand, replace just the blade ($10-$25).
Also check for debris — food or foil can get behind the rear panel and jam the blade. Remove any obstructions before condemning the motor.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG oven convection mode gives uneven results. Is the fan broken?
Not necessarily. Check that the rear panel inside the cavity is properly seated — a loose panel disrupts airflow. Also verify you are using the correct rack position for convection. If the fan is not spinning at all during convection mode, the motor has failed.
Does the LG oven cooling fan run all the time?
The cooling fan runs during any heating mode and for several minutes after the oven is turned off. This is normal and protects the control panel electronics. If you hear the fan running when the oven is cold and off, a control board issue may be keeping the relay energized.
Can I use my LG oven without the convection fan?
Yes — standard bake and broil do not use the convection fan. You lose the benefits of convection (faster, more even cooking) but the oven otherwise functions normally.
