How to Replace a Frigidaire Dishwasher: Complete Installation Guide
Replacing a dishwasher is one of the more straightforward appliance installations because the plumbing, electrical, and mounting points already exist from the previous unit. If you are replacing an old Frigidaire with a new Frigidaire (or Electrolux, which uses the same mounting system), the connections are nearly identical. Even if you are switching from a different brand to Frigidaire, the standard 24-inch dishwasher form factor means the connections will align with minimal adjustment.
This guide covers the complete process: disconnecting and removing the old unit, preparing the opening, and installing the new Frigidaire dishwasher with proper plumbing, electrical, and mounting connections.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, adjustable pliers, adjustable wrench, 1/4" nut driver, level, drill (for countertop bracket if needed), voltage tester, plumber's tape
- Parts needed: Supply line (if old one is damaged), wire nuts, cable strain relief connector, mounting screws
- Time required: 60-90 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Turn off the circuit breaker and the water supply before starting. Verify power is off with a voltage tester. Have towels ready for residual water in supply and drain lines.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Space and Utilities
Turn off the dedicated dishwasher circuit breaker (15A or 20A). Close the hot water supply valve under the sink. Turn on the kitchen faucet (hot) briefly to relieve pressure in the line. Place towels on the floor in front of the dishwasher opening. Have a shallow pan ready to catch water from disconnected lines.
Step 2: Remove the Old Dishwasher
Remove the kick plate (2 Phillips screws). Disconnect the electrical junction box (remove wire nut connections, free the Romex from strain relief). Disconnect the water supply line from the inlet valve (compression nut, counterclockwise). Disconnect the drain hose from the disposal or drain tailpiece (loosen hose clamp). Remove the countertop mounting brackets (Phillips screws into countertop underside). Lower the leveling legs to create clearance. Slide the old unit straight forward onto the towels. See our detailed removal guide for more specifics on this process.
Step 3: Inspect and Prepare the Opening
With the old unit out, inspect the cabinet opening. Check for water damage on the subfloor. Verify the supply valve is not corroded (replace now if it drips when closed). Measure the opening: standard is 24 inches wide, minimum 34 inches tall (or 34.5 inches to avoid shimming), and 24 inches deep. Clean the floor area. If the old unit leaked and the subfloor is warped, address this before installing the new unit.
Step 4: Position the New Frigidaire Dishwasher (Dry Fit)
Remove all packing materials from inside the new dishwasher and from the exterior panels. Leave the protective film on the front panel until installation is complete (prevents scratches during fitting). Route the drain hose and water supply line through the cabinet side-wall hole (the same hole used by the old unit). Slide the new dishwasher partially into the opening to verify fit. Do not fully install yet. Confirm you can reach the junction box, the inlet valve, and the drain hose connection with the unit partially pulled forward.
Step 5: Make the Electrical Connection
Frigidaire dishwashers have a junction box on the base frame (left or right side, varies by model). Remove the junction box cover (one screw). Install the cable strain relief connector into the knockout hole. Feed the house Romex cable through the strain relief. Connect the wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), bare copper to green (ground). Secure each connection with a wire nut. Tighten the strain relief around the cable. Replace the junction box cover.
Step 6: Connect the Water Supply
The inlet valve (5304482406 on most models) is on the lower left side of the unit. It has a 3/8" threaded inlet. Wrap the valve inlet threads with plumber's tape (3-4 wraps clockwise). Connect the supply line fitting. Hand-tighten, then snug with pliers (quarter turn past hand tight). Do not overtighten, as the valve body is brass and can crack. If your existing supply line is a rigid copper tube with a compression fitting, apply new plumber's tape or replace the ferrule before reconnecting.
Step 7: Connect the Drain Hose
Route the drain hose to the disposal or drain tailpiece. The hose must maintain a high loop: run it up as high as possible under the countertop before dropping down to the drain connection. This high loop prevents wastewater from the sink from back-flowing into the dishwasher. Secure the high point with a hose clip to the underside of the countertop. Connect the hose to the disposal inlet nipple (or drain branch fitting) and secure with a hose clamp. If connecting to a new garbage disposal, remember to knock out the dishwasher drain plug inside the disposal inlet first. Failing to remove this knockout is the number one cause of drainage failure on new installations.
Step 8: Level the Dishwasher
Slide the dishwasher into the opening. Use a level across the top of the open door opening (side to side and front to back). Adjust the front leveling legs by turning them with a wrench or pliers. Clockwise raises the unit, counterclockwise lowers it. Frigidaire dishwashers have two front legs and either two rear legs or rear rollers. The unit should be level or very slightly tilted toward the front (promotes drainage). Ensure the top of the dishwasher is snug against the underside of the countertop. You need the top to be close enough to the countertop for the mounting brackets to reach.
Step 9: Secure with Mounting Brackets
Frigidaire includes L-shaped mounting brackets that screw into the underside of the countertop. These prevent the dishwasher from tipping forward when the door is open with a loaded rack. Position the brackets (one on each side, at the top of the unit) and drive Phillips screws into the countertop underside. For stone or granite countertops, use the side-mount brackets that attach to the adjacent cabinet walls instead. Some Frigidaire models include adhesive strips as an alternative mounting method for stone countertops.
Step 10: Test All Connections
Before installing the kick plate, run a complete test:
- Open the water supply valve. Check the inlet valve connection for drips. Wait 2 minutes.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Run a Normal cycle. Listen for the fill (water entering).
- Once the tub is full and the wash starts, check under the unit for leaks at the supply connection and at the drain hose connections.
- When the drain phase starts, verify water flows out through the drain hose with no leaks at the disposal connection.
- Let the cycle complete fully. Verify no error codes appear.
- Install the kick plate (2 Phillips screws).
- Remove the protective film from the front panel.
Frigidaire-Specific Installation Notes
- Leveling legs: Frigidaire legs adjust with a standard wrench. Some competing brands use a built-in hex that requires a socket.
- Junction box location: Varies by model year. Some are left side, some right side. Check before routing the Romex.
- Inlet valve position: Typically lower-left. If your supply valve is on the right side of the cabinet, you may need a longer supply line.
- Drain hose length: Frigidaire includes approximately 6 feet of drain hose. If your disposal is farther, you will need an extension fitting (do not exceed 10 feet total run or the pump will struggle).
- Shared parts with Electrolux: If replacing an Electrolux dishwasher with a Frigidaire, all connections are identical. No adapter fittings needed.

When to Call a Professional
- Your home has aluminum wiring (requires special connectors, not standard wire nuts).
- The existing supply line is galvanized steel and corroded. Replacing it requires pipe work.
- The cabinet opening is not standard 24 inches (custom-width installations).
- No existing dedicated circuit. A new circuit must be run from the panel by a licensed electrician.
- The countertop is granite and you are not comfortable drilling into it for bracket mounting.

FAQ
Q: Can I install a Frigidaire dishwasher where a different brand was? A: Yes. All standard-width dishwashers use the same 24-inch opening and connect to the same water supply, drain, and electrical connections. The only adjustments needed are leg height and bracket position. Frigidaire uses the same standard connection types (3/8" water supply, standard hose clamp for drain, wire-nut electrical) as every major brand.
Q: Do I need a plumber to install a Frigidaire dishwasher? A: Not if the plumbing connections already exist from a previous dishwasher. The supply valve, drain connection, and electrical circuit are already in place. You are just reconnecting to the new unit. A plumber is only needed if you are installing a dishwasher where none existed before, or if the existing supply valve is corroded and needs replacement.
Q: What is the high loop for on the dishwasher drain hose? A: The high loop prevents dirty water from the sink (or disposal) from flowing backward into the clean dishwasher tub. The hose runs up near the countertop before dropping down to the drain connection. Gravity keeps sink water from reaching the high point. Without this loop, food waste from the disposal can siphon back into your dishwasher between cycles.
Q: How do I know which Frigidaire dishwasher model to buy as a replacement? A: For the simplest replacement, match the width (24 inches standard), the tub material you want (stainless steel for Gallery/Professional, plastic for base models), and the features you need. All Frigidaire 24-inch dishwashers have identical connection points regardless of the feature level, so installation difficulty does not change between base and Gallery models.
