Ways Into a GE Dishwasher#
Which panel you take off depends on the component you are after. These are the access points a dishwasher repair reaches for, most-used first:

What Makes a GE Teardown Different#
The GE list is the leanest of the dishwasher brands covered here, and reading it as a shorter version of the others is the mistake. It is a different cabinet, and three specific absences describe it better than the three tools that are present.
There is no star-drive bit on it. Every attested fastener on these routes is either a hexagonal head driven from outside by a nut driver or a cross recess taking a Phillips, and that is a genuinely useful thing to know before you are lying on a kitchen floor with a torch. It means a six-pointed star recess found on a panel is not part of the attested route — either you are looking at a machine that differs from the evidence behind this guide, or you are on a panel this procedure does not cover. Either way it is a moment to stop and check rather than to improvise a bit that nearly fits.
There is no prying tool on it either, and that absence carries an instruction. Nothing on the attested list is designed to release a clip: the pliers grip and pull, the drivers turn. If a panel comes free once its fasteners are out, good. If it stays put, the attested set gives you no sanctioned way to lever it, so treat the resistance as a fastener you have not found rather than a clip to defeat. A screwdriver used as a lever against a plastic edge cracks it, and the crack is usually somewhere structural rather than somewhere visible.
The third absence is a meter. Everything on this list is mechanical — getting a panel off a cabinet and out of the way. Electrical testing is a different job with an instrument this guide does not put in your hand, and it therefore does not pretend to describe one. That has a direct consequence for the first step, because a dishwasher is often wired straight into a junction box rather than plugged into an outlet. With no plug to pull and no meter on the list, your isolation rests entirely on the breaker being the right breaker. Switch it off, then confirm at the machine that the interface is completely dark and completely unresponsive before you go further. If the label on the panel and the behaviour of the machine disagree, believe the machine.
The hex heads are worth one specific note, because the nut driver is the tool most often substituted for. It grips a hexagonal head on its outside flats, and a flat-blade screwdriver forced into the same head bites on two corners instead of six. It may even turn once. What it has done is spread those corners far enough that the nut driver no longer grips, and a rounded head in a sheet-metal panel is a much longer afternoon than finding the right driver was. Seat the driver, feel whether it engages without play, and step up a size if it wobbles.
One more thing follows from the list's length rather than its contents. GE has the thinnest neighbouring teardown coverage of the three brands in this batch — one other published guide against two for each of the others. That is worth saying plainly instead of dressing up: there is less cross-checking available to you on an unfamiliar GE panel, and the case for going slowly is correspondingly stronger.

Reassembly Notes#
With only two drive types in play the sorting problem is smaller here than on a mixed cabinet, but it does not disappear. Hexagonal and cross-recess fasteners are easy to keep apart by eye; fasteners of the same head in different lengths are not, and a long screw returned to a shallow hole reaches something behind the panel that was never meant to be touched. Lay each panel's hardware out in the order it came off and the question never comes up.
Torque is the main hazard on the way back. A nut driver multiplies your hand nicely and tells you nothing about how close the fastener is to its limit, so it seats, keeps turning, and pulls the thread out of the sheet metal without any change in feel. Snug is the target. If a fastener spins without ever getting tight, the hole has already gone and turning it further does not recover it.
Support the door for the whole of any job that involves it. The door carries a counterbalance spring sized for a complete door, so a partly reassembled one is lighter than the spring expects and can come up faster than you want; loaded the other way it can drop. Keep a hand on it rather than learning which way this particular door goes.
Water first, then power. Open the supply valve under the sink while the breaker is still off and give the fitting and the hose a minute of real pressure with the machine still accessible. Seeps show themselves straight away, and finding one now costs nothing next to finding it under a closed cabinet later. When the breaker goes back on, the machine should wake up normally — anything that does not, before you push it back, is a question worth answering while you can still reach the back of it.
Watch the hose and the cable as the machine slides home. They go in behind it where you cannot see them, and a supply line kinked against a cabinet wall fails slowly and looks like something else entirely by the time it does.
When to Stop and Call a Technician#
Stop at any melted or scorched wiring — that is an electrical fault to diagnose, not an access problem to work around. Browned insulation, a connector shell that has distorted with heat, or a hot-plastic smell in the cabinet all mean current has been going somewhere it should not, and the panel you were about to remove is not the cause. Closing it back up hides the only evidence anyone will have.

Free the machine from the countertop or the cabinet sides before expecting it to slide. If it will not move once you believe the mounting is released, something is still holding it — pulling harder bends brackets, strains a supply fitting, or drags a line out of the wall behind it.
