Frigidaire Dishwasher Er: The Control Panel Thinks a Button Is Stuck
What Er Tells You
Your Frigidaire dishwasher has detected a continuous closed circuit on one of the membrane switch contacts in the control panel. The board interprets this as a button being held down permanently and locks out all input until the phantom signal clears. Unlike most dishwasher error codes, Er points exclusively to the user interface at the top of the door. The wash pump, spray arms, heating element, and drain system are all unaffected.

The Membrane Switch Design
Frigidaire dishwasher control panels use a layered membrane construction. Two sheets of flexible polyester film carry printed silver-ink circuits separated by a thin adhesive spacer. Pressing a button deforms the top layer until it contacts the bottom layer at that point, completing a circuit the board reads as input.
Gallery series models use part 154662801 for the overlay. Standard models use 154370403. Despite different overlay graphics, both connect through an identical 12-pin ribbon interface because all current-generation Frigidaire dishwashers share the Electrolux control platform underneath.
Three degradation mechanisms cause Er. Steam from wash cycles penetrates the edge seal and creates permanent moisture bridges between conductive layers. The adhesive spacer compresses from repeated presses (Start and Cancel buttons wear fastest because they receive the most use). Dry-cycle heat warps the polyester film, bringing conductive layers into unintended contact.
Diagnosis
Step 1: Determine membrane versus board failure. Pull the breaker for ten minutes to allow full capacitor discharge. Restore power. If Er appears immediately on power-up before you touch anything, the membrane has a permanent moisture short. If the display powers up normally and Er only appears when you press a specific area, you have identified the affected button zone.
Step 2: Inspect the ribbon cable. Open the inner door panel using Torx T-20 screws around the door perimeter (with the door open). Locate the flat ribbon cable connecting the overlay to the control board. Look for corrosion on the gold contact fingers (green or white deposits), a crease in the ribbon that breaks internal traces, or a connector that has walked out of its socket from door vibration.
If the connector is simply loose, reseat it firmly. Lift the locking tab, slide the ribbon fully into the socket, and press the tab down. Power cycle and test. This resolves Er in roughly one out of five cases without buying any parts.
Step 3: If the ribbon is good, the membrane overlay has failed internally. Moisture infiltration creates permanent conductive paths between silver traces that cannot be dried or cleaned. Replacement is the only option.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Replacing the Membrane Overlay
- Open the door fully. Remove the Torx screws around the inner door panel perimeter (eight to ten screws on most models).
- Close the door partway to access the top edge. Lift the inner panel away carefully because the ribbon cable connects at the top.
- Release the ribbon connector locking tab and disconnect.
- Peel the old overlay from the outer door surface. Use a plastic scraper to remove adhesive residue. Clean with isopropyl alcohol until the surface is smooth.
- Align the new overlay starting from the top edge. Press firmly across the entire surface, working from center outward to prevent air bubbles.
- Route the new ribbon through the door slot. Connect to the board with gold contacts facing the board surface.
- Reassemble the inner panel. Restore power and verify every button responds.
Parts and Cost
| Part | Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Membrane overlay (Gallery) | 154662801 | $45-$85 |
| Membrane overlay (standard) | 154370403 | $35-$70 |
| Ribbon cable (if damaged) | 154712501 | $12-$20 |
DIY overlay replacement takes 20 to 30 minutes. Professional repair adds $80 to $120 in labor.

When the Board Is the Problem
If replacing the overlay does not resolve Er, the control board's key-scanning input multiplexer has failed. Board replacement (807024801) runs $150 to $250 for parts alone. Board replacement involves multiple connectors and requires ESD precautions, so unless you have experience with PCB-level appliance work, this is best handled by a technician with Frigidaire platform experience.
Gallery vs. Standard Differences for Er
Gallery and Professional Series models use higher-quality overlay materials with a thicker edge seal, so Er tends to appear later in the product lifecycle (typically after seven or more years versus five on standard models). However, Gallery models also generate more steam during intensive wash cycles, partially offsetting the better seal. The underlying ribbon connector and board interface are identical across all tiers.

FAQ
Can I run the dishwasher at all with Er displayed? No. The control board locks out all cycle commands while Er is active. It cannot distinguish your intentional button presses from the phantom signal, so it refuses to accept any input.
Does Er come back after a power cycle? If the membrane has a permanent moisture bridge, Er returns immediately on power-up. If condensation caused a temporary bridge that evaporated during the breaker-off period, the code may stay cleared. Monitor for 48 hours before assuming the problem is gone.
Is Er covered under Frigidaire warranty? The standard warranty is one year parts and labor. Membrane overlays are classified as wear components, but manufacturing defects in the edge seal may be covered. Contact Electrolux/Frigidaire at 1-800-374-4432 with your model and serial number.
