How to Repair an LG NeoChef Microwave
Match the symptom to the circuit first: a squeal is the ventilation fan bearing, no heat is the magnetron or Smart Inverter board, a dead display is usually the thermal fuse, a still turntable is the motor or its coupler. Every one of those repairs starts the same way — unplug the oven, take the cabinet off, and…
This is the one repair where the safety step is not optional. A microwave capacitor can hold up to 5000V long after the cord is out of the wall. Short across its terminals with a properly insulated screwdriver, then confirm 0V on a multimeter before touching anything else.
Match the symptom to the circuit#
| Symptom | Likely cause | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Squeal or grinding while running | Ventilation fan bearing | Listen with the cabinet off — fan or magnetron? |
| Runs but food stays cold | Magnetron, Smart Inverter board or diode | Resistance across the magnetron terminals |
| No display, no response | Thermal fuse, power supply or door switch | Continuity across the thermal fuse |
| Turntable does not turn | Turntable motor or coupler | Does the motor hum? Check the coupler |
| Sparking in the cavity | Waveguide cover damage or exposed metal | Stop using it |

Getting inside#
Unplug the oven. The back panel carries eight to twelve Phillips or Torx T20 screws around its perimeter; take them all out and slide the cabinet backwards off the chassis, exposing the inverter board, magnetron, cooling fan and capacitor. Discharge the capacitor now. On the bench you want a Torx T20 without a center pin, a Phillips #2, a 7mm nut driver, a multimeter and a capacitor discharge tool. Allow 30 to 60 minutes depending on the fault.
The squeaky fan#
The most common NeoChef complaint I see. The fan cools the magnetron and inverter board during and after cooking, so its bearings endure constant thermal cycling until they squeal. It sits on the right of the chassis on a bracket held by two or three screws, with a two-wire harness: unplug it, unbolt the bracket, fit the LG replacement for your model.
For a mild squeak, peel back the label sticker on the fan hub and put a drop of synthetic motor oil into each bearing: six to twelve months of relief, not a fix.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Microwave capacitors store lethal voltage (4,000V+) even when unplugged. This is the single most dangerous DIY appliance repair. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

No heat#
With the capacitor discharged, disconnect the magnetron leads and measure across its two terminals. A healthy magnetron reads under 1 ohm; infinite resistance means it is open. Then measure each terminal to the chassis — infinite is what you want, and any continuity means it is shorted.
If the magnetron measures fine but heating is absent or intermittent, suspect the Smart Inverter board. It replaces the old high-voltage transformer and produces genuinely variable power rather than switching full output on and off. It sits behind or beside the control panel on four to six screws with high-voltage leads to the magnetron. Note where every harness goes before you pull it, and order the board for your exact model — the wrong one will not deliver the right power.
Dead display and the stalled turntable#
A thermal fuse blows when the cavity overheats and the oven goes completely dead. Find it on the magnetron housing or the cavity wall, test it for continuity, and fit the same rating — typically 216F or 250F on LG models. Then find out why it blew: a blocked vent is the usual reason, so clean every air path before running it again.
For the turntable, reach under the cavity floor. The motor is held by two or three screws with a two-wire lead. If it hums but nothing turns, check the plastic coupler between the motor shaft and the tray support before condemning the motor.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Prove the repair#
Rebuild the cabinet, every screw in its own hole, then test what you fixed. Thirty seconds of running should sound smooth. A cup of water for 60 seconds should come out distinctly hot — a 1000W oven boils 8oz in roughly 90 seconds. The tray should rotate steadily in both directions. If your model supports Smart Diagnosis, the LG ThinQ app reads the oven's tone through your phone microphone on NeoChef units built after 2016.
Stop and call someone#
Sparking or arcing means a shielding breach. A cracked magnetron insulator exposes beryllium oxide ceramic, toxic to handle. Burning plastic or an ozone smell after a repair means something is still wrong. If the capacitor step gave you pause, that is a good instinct — book a repair.
