Step 1 — Determine the failure pattern#
Which buttons fail? A fully dead panel (nothing responds) usually points to the ribbon-cable connection or a blown upstream fuse. Certain buttons failing (often a specific row or column) means the membrane traces for those buttons have degraded — cleaning may help. Buttons registering the wrong input (pressing "5" triggers "8") means the membrane alignment is off or the touchpad itself needs replacing.
Step 2 — Remove the outer cabinet#
Unplug the microwave and remove the rear screws (typically 6-10 Phillips or Torx T20 on GE models), then slide the cabinet backward and lift it off. CRITICAL: avoid the right side of the interior where the high-voltage capacitor sits — a large cylindrical component — and do not touch it or any wires connected to it. Install in reverse: connect the ribbon cable to the ZIF connector, secure the board bracket, and reassemble the cabinet, testing all buttons before final reassembly.

After reassembly, plug in and test every button — the number pad (all digits), power level, cook time, start/pause, and any specialty buttons (sensor cook, popcorn) — then run a 30-second test with a cup of water to verify heating, and watch for any odd behavior over the first few uses. Pay particular attention to whether every button in a row or column responds the same, since a single dead line usually means the ribbon cable is seated slightly crooked in its ZIF connector and a quick reseat fixes it.
