LG Microwave Control Board Replacement — Keypad vs Main Board
LG microwave control boards come in two forms: the membrane keypad (touchpad overlay) that you press to select functions, and the main control board (PCB) behind it that processes inputs and controls the magnetron, turntable motor, and fan. These are separate components, and the keypad fails far more often than the board itself.
Keypad vs Main Board Failures
Membrane keypad failure (common): Individual buttons stop responding, ghost-presses activate functions randomly, or the keypad triggers continuous beeping. The membrane overlay develops hairline cracks in the conductive traces from years of pressing. This does not require replacing the main PCB — just the keypad overlay.
Main board failure (less common): The microwave is completely dead (no display, no response), or it runs the magnetron continuously regardless of input (extremely dangerous — unplug immediately). The main PCB has a failed component — usually a shorted triac, blown fuse, or failed relay.

| Display works but no heating | Main board relay or magnetron | Test board relay |
| Completely dead, no display | Main board power supply | Test board fuse |
| Runs continuously without stopping | Main board triac shorted | Unplug immediately, replace board |

Critical Safety Warning — High Voltage Capacitor
Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that stores a lethal charge (2,000V+) even when unplugged. Before touching any internal component, the capacitor must be discharged. This is not a standard household repair precaution — it is a life-safety requirement.
If you are not experienced with high-voltage electronics, this repair should be done by a professional. The control board itself is a low-voltage component, but accessing it often requires reaching past or near the high-voltage section.
Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for outer cabinet screws
- Insulated screwdriver — for capacitor discharge (professionals only)
- Multimeter — for testing fuses and relay contacts

Replacement Steps (Main Board)
Unplug the microwave. Remove the outer cabinet (typically 4-6 Phillips screws on the back, then slide the cover back and off). Discharge the high-voltage capacitor. The control board is mounted behind the control panel on the front of the unit.
Disconnect all wire harnesses from the board (photograph first). Remove the board mounting screws (3-5 Phillips). Install the new board, reconnect all harnesses, reassemble the cabinet.
Test by running a 30-second cycle with a cup of water inside — the water should be noticeably warmer after 30 seconds.
Replacement Steps (Keypad Only)
The membrane keypad is adhesive-mounted to the front panel over the board. Peel it off carefully (a hair dryer softens the adhesive). Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol. Apply the new keypad, pressing firmly to seat the adhesive. Test all buttons.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG microwave buttons beep randomly without pressing them. Is the board bad?
More likely the membrane keypad has developed trace cracks causing phantom inputs. Replace the keypad ($25-$80) before the main board ($80-$220). If random operation continues with a new keypad, then the board is at fault.
Is it safe to replace an LG microwave control board myself?
The board itself is low-voltage, but accessing it requires opening the microwave cabinet near the high-voltage capacitor. If you know how to safely discharge a capacitor, the board swap is straightforward. Otherwise, hire a professional.
My LG microwave display works but it will not heat. Is that the control board?
Possibly, but test the door switches first — LG microwaves have 3 door interlock switches, and if any one fails, the magnetron will not activate. Also check the high-voltage fuse and diode.
