Hotpoint Dishwasher C4: Water Fill Timeout
The C4 Diagnosis
Your Hotpoint dishwasher started a cycle but never filled with water — or filled too slowly — and posted C4. The control board expected the water level to reach the fill threshold within a set time window (typically 8-10 minutes), and it did not. The board canceled the cycle and displayed C4.
On the GE platform that all Hotpoint dishwashers use, C4 strictly means "not enough water arrived in time." The question is why.

Supply-Side Problems (Check These First)
Before opening the dishwasher or touching any internal parts, verify that water can actually reach the machine:
Household Supply Valve
The supply valve is under the kitchen sink, usually on the hot water line. These valves — especially older gate valves — can seize partially closed over time without anyone touching them. Turn the valve fully counterclockwise (open). If it feels stiff or grinds, the valve stem may be corroded. On ball valves (lever handle), the handle should be parallel to the pipe when fully open.
A partially open supply valve reduces flow rate enough that the dishwasher cannot fill within its timeout window, even though some water trickles in.
Supply Line Condition
The braided stainless supply hose connecting the valve to the dishwasher inlet can kink where it bends behind the machine. Mineral deposits can build up inside, gradually restricting flow. If your supply hose is the older copper tubing type, check for pinch points or corrosion restrictions. Replacing the supply hose ($10-$15) is cheap insurance on any machine over 5 years old.
Household Water Pressure
If multiple fixtures in your home have low flow, the issue is upstream of the dishwasher. Water pressure below 20 PSI can prevent the dishwasher from filling in time. This can happen during peak neighborhood usage or when a whole-house filter is clogged. Test at any hose bib with a $10 pressure gauge — normal range is 40-60 PSI.
The Water Inlet Valve
The inlet valve is the electromechanical gate between your supply line and the dishwasher tub. When the board starts a fill cycle, it sends 120V AC to the valve solenoid, which opens the valve and allows water to flow. C4 occurs when:
The solenoid coil has burned out. The board sends voltage but nothing opens. Test: disconnect power, remove the valve's electrical connector, measure coil resistance — expect 500-1500 ohms. Open circuit (no reading) = dead coil. Valve replacement: $25-$50.
The valve diaphragm is stuck. Mineral deposits cement the internal rubber diaphragm in the closed position. The solenoid energizes but cannot pull the diaphragm open against the mineral bond. You may hear a quiet buzzing from the valve area when fill is commanded. Replacement is the only fix — you cannot effectively descale the internal mechanism.
The inlet screen is clogged. A small mesh screen sits inside the valve's inlet port where the supply hose connects. Sediment and mineral flakes accumulate here, restricting flow. Disconnect the supply hose (have a towel ready — water will drip), remove the screen with needle-nose pliers, rinse it clean or replace it. This takes under 5 minutes and is the easiest C4 fix.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

The Water Level Sensor (Pressure Switch)
The dishwasher uses a pressure switch connected to the tub via a small air tube to detect water level. If this tube is cracked, kinked, or clogged with debris, the switch cannot accurately sense water level — it may think the tub is empty even when water is present, causing the board to keep filling (resulting in overfill) or to think filling never started (resulting in C4).
Check the small rubber air tube running from the tub base to the pressure switch for cracks or disconnections. Blow through the tube gently — you should feel no restriction. Pressure switch replacement: $20-$40.
Board-Level Fill Relay
On rare occasions, the control board's fill relay — the component that switches 120V to the inlet valve — fails. The board commands a fill but the relay does not close. This is a board-level failure ($120-$200 for the board). Before assuming board failure, verify voltage at the inlet valve connector during a fill attempt (should read approximately 120V AC).
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Diagnostic Sequence for C4
- Open supply valve fully and verify flow at the sink faucet
- Start a cycle and listen for the inlet valve buzzing or clicking — silence means no voltage reaching the valve or dead solenoid
- If the valve buzzes but no water enters, the inlet screen is clogged or the valve diaphragm is stuck
- If water enters slowly but not fast enough, check supply pressure and inlet screen
- If water enters at full rate but C4 still posts, the pressure switch or its air tube is faulty

Hard Water Regions
Sacramento Valley homes with well water or municipal water high in minerals see inlet valve and screen failures at roughly twice the rate of soft-water areas. The mineral deposits accumulate inside the valve body and on the screen, gradually restricting flow over 3-5 years. In hard water areas, inspecting and cleaning the inlet screen annually prevents most C4 occurrences.
Questions About Hotpoint C4
My dishwasher fills partially then posts C4. What is different from no fill at all? Partial fill usually means restricted flow — clogged screen, partially closed supply valve, or low house pressure. The dishwasher gets some water but cannot reach the target level before timeout. This is typically cheaper to fix than a complete no-fill condition.
I hear clicking when C4 appears. Is that the valve? Clicking is the board repeatedly attempting to energize the inlet valve. If the valve solenoid is open-circuit, the relay on the board clicks but nothing happens at the valve. If the valve buzzes with each click but no water flows, the diaphragm is stuck.
Can I add water manually and run the dishwasher? Technically you can pour water into the tub, but the board expects the pressure switch to confirm the fill. Without a working fill system, the board may not advance past the fill stage regardless of how much water is physically in the tub.
