GE Profile smart dishwashers (PDT785SYNFS, PDT755SYRFS series) with the PowerClean auto-detergent dispenser report AutoDet-E1 in the SmartHQ app when the dispenser module cannot communicate with the main control board.
What PowerClean Auto-Detergent Does#
GE Profile's PowerClean system holds up to 30 loads worth of liquid detergent in a reservoir. The control board commands the dispenser pump to release a measured dose at the start of each cycle based on: (1) cycle selection (Normal, Heavy, Light), (2) soil level setting, (3) water hardness setting configured in SmartHQ.
AutoDet-E1 means the main board sent a dispense command but received no acknowledgment from the dispenser module.

Causes#
1. Dispenser Module Wire Harness Disconnected (35%) The PowerClean module connects to the main board through a 4-pin wire harness inside the door. The harness passes through the door hinge area — repeated door opening/closing can work the connector loose over 2-3 years. Fix: remove the inner door panel (6x T15 Torx), inspect and reseat the 4-pin connector.
2. Dispenser Pump Motor Failure (30%) The precision pump (WD28X27235) is a small peristaltic pump with silicone tubing. The tubing can deteriorate from contact with detergent chemicals, causing the pump to stall. When the pump stalls, it cannot send the "dispense complete" signal to the main board.
Fix: Replace the pump module. Accessible through the inner door panel.
3. Dispenser Reservoir Empty (20%) When the reservoir runs out of detergent, the pump runs dry and may not generate enough back-pressure to register a dispense event. SmartHQ should show "Refill Detergent" before AutoDet-E1, but sometimes the reservoir sensor misreads the level.
Fix: Refill the reservoir. If the error persists after refilling, the reservoir level sensor (float type) may be stuck. Remove the reservoir and clean the float.
4. Main Board Communication Port (10%) The main board's communication port for the dispenser has failed. This is diagnosed by: connector is firmly seated, pump motor runs when tested directly with 12V, but the board does not communicate. Board replacement required (WD21X28909).
5. Detergent Viscosity Issue (5%) Very thick gel detergents can clog the pump tubing. The pump strains and may stall. GE recommends liquid detergent with viscosity similar to Dawn dish soap. Very thick gels (some store brands) or gel pods dissolved in the reservoir can exceed the pump's flow capability.
Immediate Workaround#
If AutoDet-E1 persists, you can continue using the dishwasher by adding detergent manually to the traditional dispenser cup on the door. The auto-detergent system failure does not affect wash performance — it only removes the convenience of automatic dosing.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Is This a Smart-Feature Issue or a Hardware Issue?#
AutoDet-E1 is a smart-specific hardware issue — the auto-detergent dispenser is a component that exists only on smart GE Profile dishwashers. In 35% of cases, it is a loose wire harness (free fix if you access the connector yourself). In 50% of cases, the pump module or reservoir sensor needs repair. Only 10% involve the main board communication port.

Cost Comparison: Auto-Dose vs Manual Dispensing | Feature | Manual Dispenser | Auto-Dose (PowerClean) |#
|---------|-----------------|----------------------| | Purchase premium | Included | + in dishwasher price | | Detergent waste | User-dependent | 10-15% less waste | | Repair cost when it fails | N/A | (pump module) | | 5-year savings vs repair risk | | ~ saved, repair risk | Auto-dose roughly breaks even over 5 years when you compare detergent savings against repair probability.

How Can You Prevent This?#
Use liquid detergent with viscosity similar to Dawn dish soap — very thick gels can clog the peristaltic pump tubing. Do not mix different detergent brands in the reservoir without flushing. Clean the reservoir every 6 months by removing it, rinsing with warm water, and checking the float sensor moves freely. Do not let the reservoir run completely empty — the pump running dry can damage the tubing.
Frequently Asked Questions#
Q: Can I use gel pods in the auto-detergent reservoir? A: No. The PowerClean reservoir is designed for liquid detergent only. Gel pods do not dissolve properly in the reservoir and can clog the pump tubing. Use liquid detergent with a thin to medium viscosity.
Q: How many loads does the auto-detergent reservoir hold? A: Approximately 30 loads on the standard detergent dose setting. The SmartHQ app tracks loads remaining and sends a refill reminder. After AutoDet-E1, the app cannot track loads — use the reservoir window to visually check levels if you bypass the error with manual dispensing.
Q: Is it worth repairing the auto-detergent system? A: If the issue is a loose wire harness (service call), absolutely. If the pump module needs replacement, weigh against the remaining life of the dishwasher. For a dishwasher under 5 years old, the repair is worthwhile. Over 7 years, consider whether the convenience justifies the cost — manual dispensing works identically for wash performance.
