Frigidaire Dryer Switch Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire dryers have two operational switches that commonly fail: the door switch and the start switch. The door switch is a safety interlock that stops the dryer when the door opens. The start switch is a momentary-contact button on the console that engages the motor. Both are simple, inexpensive mechanical components.
Door Switch
The door switch is mounted on the front panel frame, near the door opening. It is actuated by a small striker on the door that presses the switch plunger when the door closes. On Frigidaire dryers, the door switch is a separate component from the door latch (catch) — unlike some dishwasher models where they are combined.
Key Frigidaire detail: Because all Frigidaire dryers support door reversal, the door switch must be repositioned when the door is reversed. There are pre-drilled mounting holes on both sides of the front panel. If a previous owner reversed the door but forgot to move the switch, the dryer will not start — the striker does not align with the switch on the wrong side.
Door Switch Symptoms
- Dryer does not start at all (no motor, no heat, no tumble)
- Dryer starts but stops immediately as if the door opened
- Dryer runs with the door open (switch stuck closed — safety hazard, replace immediately)
Door Switch Test
Multimeter on continuity. Disconnect power. Disconnect the switch wires. Press the plunger: should show continuity. Release: should show open circuit. No change = failed switch.

Start Switch
The start switch is a momentary button on the console panel. You push it, the motor starts, and the cycle begins. It is mounted behind the console panel with the other control components.
Start Switch Symptoms
- Pressing start does nothing — no click, no motor response. The door switch and other controls work fine
- You have to press start multiple times before the motor catches — intermittent contact in the switch
Start Switch Test
Disconnect power. Remove console end caps and screws, tilt console forward. Locate the start switch. Disconnect its wires. Multimeter on continuity: pressing the button should momentarily show continuity.

Replacing the Door Switch
- Unplug the dryer.
- Open the dryer door. The door switch is visible on the front panel frame — a small rectangular body with a protruding plunger, held by 1–2 screws.
- Disconnect the wires (2 or 3 wires, depending on model — some have a common terminal).
- Remove the mounting screws and pull the switch out.
- Install the new switch in the same position. Reconnect wires. Ensure the plunger aligns with the door striker.
- Test by closing the door and starting a cycle. The dryer should run. Open the door — should stop immediately.
Tools: Phillips #2, multimeter. Time: 10–15 minutes.

Door Reversal Switch Alignment
If your dryer was recently reversed (or you bought it second-hand and do not know), verify the door switch alignment:
- Close the door and look at where the door striker (a small protrusion on the door) contacts the front panel
- The switch plunger should be directly behind that contact point
- If the switch is on the opposite side, move it to the correct pre-drilled location
FAQ
My Frigidaire dryer won't start — is it the door switch?
Most likely. Test with a multimeter first. Also verify the switch aligns with the door striker — misalignment after door reversal is a common cause.
Can a Frigidaire dryer run with a bad door switch?
If the switch is stuck closed, yes — and this is a safety hazard. The dryer tumbles with the door open. Replace immediately.
Where is the start switch on a Frigidaire dryer?
Behind the console panel. Remove the end caps and console screws, tilt the console forward to access.
Does door reversal affect the switch?
Yes. The door switch must be moved to align with the door striker on the new hinge side. Pre-drilled mounting holes exist on both sides.
