Frigidaire Dryer EAF: Airflow Restriction Detected
The One Code That Is Usually Not a Parts Failure
EAF stands apart from most error codes because it typically does not indicate a failed component inside the dryer. Instead, the board has detected that exhaust air temperature is abnormally high because heated air is not leaving the dryer fast enough. The most common cause is a clogged exhaust vent duct between the dryer and the exterior wall termination.

How the Board Detects Restricted Airflow
The exhaust thermistor measures outgoing air temperature. Under normal airflow, exhaust temperature stays between 125 and 175 degrees F. When the vent duct is restricted, hot air recirculates instead of exhausting. The exhaust temperature climbs above 185-200 degrees F, and the board logs EAF.
This is a progressive condition. Before EAF appears, you likely noticed longer drying times, excessive heat on the exterior of the dryer cabinet, and clothes that felt unusually hot when removed.
Vent Cleaning Procedure
- Unplug the dryer. Pull it away from the wall.
- Disconnect the flexible transition duct from the dryer exhaust port (usually a clamp or foil tape).
- Look through the duct from the dryer end. If you cannot see daylight at the exterior termination, the duct is obstructed.
- Use a dryer vent brush kit ($15-$25, available at hardware stores) to clean the full run. Push the brush through from the dryer end until it exits the exterior flap.
- At the exterior termination, remove the flap cover and clear any lint or debris from the opening. Bird nests in exterior vents are surprisingly common.
- Reconnect the transition duct. Secure with a proper clamp (not screws, which catch lint).
- Run a timed dry on High for ten minutes. Check the exterior vent flap. You should feel strong, warm airflow. If airflow is weak, the duct has a remaining restriction.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

When the Problem Is Not the Vent
If the vent is completely clean and EAF persists:
Blower wheel obstruction. The blower wheel inside the dryer pushes air through the drum and out the exhaust. Lint can accumulate on the blower wheel fins, reducing its efficiency. Accessing the blower wheel requires removing the front panel and drum (substantial disassembly).
Exhaust thermistor drift. The thermistor may read artificially high, triggering EAF at normal temperatures. Test by measuring its resistance (should be 10,000-12,000 ohms at room temperature).
Transition duct too long. Building codes typically limit dryer vent runs to 25 feet with deductions for each elbow (5 feet per 90-degree turn, 2.5 feet per 45-degree turn). An excessively long or elbowed duct exceeds the dryer blower's capacity.

Vent Material Matters
Replace any vinyl or plastic flexible duct with rigid metal or semi-rigid aluminum. Vinyl ducts have ribbed interiors that trap lint and create airflow turbulence. Rigid metal ducts have smooth interiors that minimize lint accumulation. Many building codes now prohibit vinyl dryer ducts due to fire risk.

FAQ
How often should I clean the dryer vent? Annually for most households. More frequently (every six months) for larger families or homes with pets. Lint production varies with fabric type and load frequency.
Can EAF cause a fire? EAF itself is a protection against fire. The code alerts you to a condition (restricted airflow causing overheating) that, left unaddressed, increases fire risk. Cleaning the vent is the proper response.
EAF only appears during long cycles. Why? Marginal vent restriction allows adequate airflow during short cycles but becomes insufficient during extended runs as lint accumulates in the duct and exhaust temperature gradually rises.
Frigidaire dryer EAF usually means your vent needs cleaning. If the vent is already clean, our technicians diagnose blower and sensor issues. Schedule service.
