Frigidaire Dryer E64: Heating Element Circuit Open
What E64 Means
E64 is the opposite of E61. While E61 means the element will not shut off, E64 means the element will not turn on at all. The board commands the relay closed and monitors the current sense circuit, but detects zero amps flowing through the element. The drum tumbles but produces no heat.

Four Points Where the Circuit Can Open
The heating element itself. The resistance wire inside the heater box has burned through completely. No continuity from end to end. Part: model-specific, $35-$70.
The thermal fuse. A one-shot safety device wired in series with the element. When the dryer overheats (usually from a clogged vent), the thermal fuse blows permanently to cut element power. The fuse mounts on the heater box or blower housing. Part: 137032600 or model-specific, $5-$15.
The high-limit thermostat. Some Frigidaire models use a resettable high-limit in series with the element. Unlike the thermal fuse, this device resets when cooled. However, repeated tripping can eventually cause it to fail permanently open.
Wiring. A burned or broken wire between the board relay output and the element terminals. Most commonly found at the heater box connection where high current and heat stress the wire insulation.
Diagnostic Sequence
- Unplug dryer. Remove rear panel.
- Locate the thermal fuse (small white or gray cylindrical device on the heater housing or blower housing). Measure continuity through it. Zero ohms means it is intact. Open means it has blown. Replace it, but also investigate WHY it blew (typically vent restriction).
- Measure element resistance. 8-15 ohms is healthy. Infinite means burned through.
- If both are good, check the high-limit thermostat continuity and all wiring connections in the element circuit.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Critical Warning About Thermal Fuses
If the thermal fuse has blown, replacing it without clearing the root cause means the new fuse will also blow. Thermal fuses blow from overheating, which almost always means the exhaust vent is clogged. Clean the entire vent run from dryer to exterior termination before replacing the fuse.

Gallery Dryer Specifics
Gallery models with the Effortless temperature control feature use a variable-output element design where the board modulates element power using phase-angle control rather than simple on/off relay switching. E64 on a Gallery model can indicate a failed triac in the phase-angle circuit rather than a simple relay, making the diagnostic slightly more complex than on standard models.
FAQ
E64 appeared immediately after vent cleaning. Did I cause it? Unlikely. Vent cleaning probably coincided with a thermal fuse that was about to blow. The fuse likely blew during the last cycle before cleaning, and you noticed E64 during the first cycle after.
Can I bypass the thermal fuse temporarily? Never. The thermal fuse is a critical safety device. Bypassing it allows the dryer to operate without overheating protection. A dryer fire can result.
Both the fuse and element are good. What else stops heat? Check the wiring at the heater box terminal block. High current (20+ amps) through aging wire creates hot spots that eventually melt the insulation and break the conductor. Look for discolored or charred wire at connection points.
