Frigidaire Dryer E63: Not Enough Heat
The Symptoms Before E63
You probably noticed it before the code appeared: clothes taking two or three cycles to dry completely. Items that used to dry in 45 minutes now take 90. Towels coming out still damp at the center. These are the hallmarks of reduced heating capacity, and E63 confirms the board has measured insufficient temperature rise during the heating phase.

Three Possible Causes
Partially failed heating element ($35-$70). Electric dryer heating elements are coiled resistance wire mounted in an insulating framework. As the element ages, individual coils can break. Each broken coil reduces total wattage. A 5,400-watt element with two broken coils might produce only 3,600 watts -- enough to produce some heat but not enough to reach the board's expected temperature within the timeout.
To test: unplug the dryer. Remove the rear panel. Disconnect the element wires. Measure resistance across the element. A healthy Frigidaire dryer element reads 8-15 ohms. Higher than 20 ohms suggests broken coils. Infinite means complete failure. Also visually inspect through the heater box opening for broken or sagging coils.
Restricted exhaust vent ($0 to fix). A dryer vent clogged with lint restricts airflow. Without adequate airflow, heated air recirculates inside the drum rather than exhausting. The exhaust sensor reads high temperatures (because hot air is not leaving), but the inlet sensor reads low temperatures (because the element cannot heat stagnant air effectively). The board interprets this mismatch as insufficient heating.
To test: disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Run a timed dry on High. If performance dramatically improves, the vent duct is the restriction. Clean the entire vent run from dryer to exterior termination.
Thermistor drift. The inlet or exhaust thermistor may have drifted enough to report artificially high temperatures. The board thinks the dryer is hotter than it actually is and cycles the element off prematurely.
Vent Cleaning vs. Element Replacement
Start with the vent. A clogged vent is the most common cause of insufficient heat in any dryer and costs nothing to fix. Disconnect the duct, clean it thoroughly (dryer vent brush kits cost $15-$25 at hardware stores), and reconnect. If E63 clears after vent cleaning, you are done.
If the vent is clean and E63 persists, test the element and thermistors as described above.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Element Replacement
Part: model-specific, typically $35-$70.
- Unplug dryer. Remove rear panel.
- Disconnect element wires (two or four terminals depending on model).
- Remove heater box mounting screws (four to six screws).
- Pull the heater box out. Remove the element from the box (mounting clips or additional screws).
- Install new element. Reinstall the heater box. Reconnect wires.
- Reassemble. Run High heat timed dry. Measure exhaust temperature: should reach 150-170 degrees within ten minutes.

FAQ
Can a partially failed element cause a fire? A broken coil that sags and contacts the heater box housing creates a short-circuit path. This typically trips the house breaker rather than causing a fire, but any element with visible damage should be replaced promptly.
E63 appears only on large loads. Normal with small loads. Large loads restrict airflow through the drum more than small loads. This amplifies the effect of a partially clogged vent. Clean the vent first.
My dryer is gas. Can E63 still appear? Yes. Gas Frigidaire dryers use E63 for insufficient burner temperature. Causes include a weak gas valve solenoid (cannot open fully), dirty igniter, or restricted vent.
