The short answer
An EdgeStar compact dishwasher smells because water is standing somewhere it should not be. On this class the usual places are the small sump filter, the folds of the door gasket, the loop in the drain hose and — on tank-fill models — the fill tank itself. Most likely causes on a compact portable dishwasher, in order
- The machine stored closed and damp between uses — a portable is wheeled away with the door shut and the tub wet, often into a warm cupboard, and that combination does more for a smell than any amount of detergent choice
- Biofilm in the filter and sump — first, because a compact machine has no food grinder and a very small sump, so everything that comes off a plate sits on one screen in a warm damp box between cycles
- The door gasket and the underside of the door lip — the second reservoir: soft folds hold water and food, they are never reached by the wash, and they are exactly where the smell is strongest when you put your nose to it
- Standing water in the drain hose loop — a hose that loops over a sink lip holds water in the bend permanently, and in warm weather that water is what you can smell rather than anything inside the machine
What to check, and why in this order
- Store the machine with the door ajar and the hoses drained — On a portable the storage condition is the main variable
- Put your nose to the gasket, then to the open filter, then to the hose end. — Whichever is strongest tells you where to start and saves cleaning all three blind
- Pull and wash the filter and sump screen — It is the most common source and the machine cannot clean itself while it is dirty

- Unplug the machine, lift out the filter assembly and the sump screen, and wash both in hot soapy water with an old toothbrush. — Time: several minutes.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix a dishwasher cleaner, vinegar or any acid with bleach or with a chlorine product — the combination releases a toxic gas. Use one product per cycle, run the machine empty when cleaning it, and unplug it before removing a filter.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the smell returns within days of a full clean, when water is standing in the base between cycles, or when the smell is coming from behind the tub rather than from the filter, gasket or hose. A persistent smell with clean components usually means water is being retained somewhere you cannot reach.
