The short answer
Door complaints on an EdgeStar compact dishwasher are usually alignment rather than a failed gasket. A machine sitting on an uneven worktop, or one whose gasket was cleaned and not pushed back into its channel, produces steam at the edge and water at the door foot. Both are owner fixes. A gasket that is split or hardened is a part, and the latch is a safety interlock that is never adjusted with force. Most likely causes on a compact portable dishwasher, in order
- The machine stored closed and damp between uses — a portable is wheeled away with the door shut and the tub wet, often into a warm cupboard, and that combination does more for a smell than any amount of detergent choice
- The machine is not sitting flat — first because a compact machine sits on a worktop rather than being bolted into a cabinet, and a rocking machine puts the door out of square with the tub every time it is loaded
- Gasket not fully seated in its channel — the most common consequence of cleaning: the gasket looks fitted, sits a fraction proud at one corner, and lets a sheet of water out at the door foot on every fill
What to check, and why in this order
- Store the machine with the door ajar and the hoses drained — On a portable the storage condition is the main variable
- Check the machine is sitting flat and solid on the worktop first — A rocking machine reproduces every symptom below and undoes every fix above it

- Press down on each corner of the machine in turn and check it does not rock. Move it onto a flat area of worktop or pack a foot if needed. — Time: a few minutes.
- After each cycle, drain the hoses, wipe the tub and store the machine with its door propped ajar. — Time: several minutes.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bend, pack, tape or shim a door latch to make it close. It is the interlock that keeps a hot, pressurised wash inside the tub, and defeating it is the one thing on this page that can injure someone. Unplug the machine before working near the latch.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the gasket is split or will not stay in its channel, when the door needs force to latch after cleaning and alignment, or when a hinge has clearly worn. A door interlock is a safety part and is fitted rather than adjusted.
