The short answer
Before treating an EdgeStar compact dishwasher as a heating failure, settle what it is supposed to do. Most likely causes on a compact portable dishwasher, in order
- Cold inlet water and an expectation mismatch — first on this class: a small element working on cold water within a short cycle produces warm rather than hot, and that is how the machine was designed rather than a fault to be repaired
- The machine not level where it was parked — a portable is wheeled to a different spot each time, and a machine standing out of level fills to an uneven depth and sprays unevenly — a variable a fixed machine simply does not have
- The cycle selected — eco and short cycles deliberately wash cooler and dry less, and selecting one by habit is the second most common answer to this complaint

- Put a level on the top of the machine where it stands for the cycle and adjust or reposition it until it is flat. — Time: several minutes.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not attempt to test a heating element or a thermal cut-out. Both sit in the live circuit and both are reached only by dismantling a machine that has just been full of hot water. Let the machine cool and unplug it before removing a filter.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the wash water is genuinely cold at the end of the longest cycle with hot water going in, when the machine heats for a while and then stops, or when a temperature code appears. Element and thermal cut-out work is live work and is not an owner job.
