The short answer
An EdgeStar compact dishwasher that stalls part-way through a cycle is almost always failing to prove something rather than failing mechanically. The two things it has to prove repeatedly are that it can fill and that it can drain, and on this class both depend on a hose and a tap rather than on plumbing. Most likely causes on a compact portable dishwasher, in order
- Fill not proven part-way through — first, because a compact machine fills more than once in a cycle and a tap that was closed, a tank that emptied or the quick-connect fitting at the tap that worked itself loose stops the cycle at the second fill rather than at the start
- The machine unplugged and moved between cycles — a portable loses power every time it is put away, so a control returning to defaults or holding a stale state is ordinary behaviour on this form and not evidence of a failure
- Drain not proven — the mirror image, and the second most common: a hose that kinks once the machine has warmed and softened it, or a sink that filled up, stalls the cycle at a drain step every time

- Open the tap fully, or fill the internal tank to its mark, and confirm the coupling at the tap is fully seated. — Time: several minutes.
- Straighten the drain hose over its whole run, re-hang it clear of standing water, and empty the sink. — Time: a few minutes.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not open the door to look mid-cycle on a machine that has been heating — wash water and steam can scald. Unplug the machine before removing a filter, and never tape or shim a door latch to stop it bouncing.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the cycle stalls at the same point with the tap open, the hose clear, the filter clean and the machine on its own outlet, or when a sensor code appears mid-cycle. A repeatable stall at a fixed point is a good fault to hand over, so note where it happens.
