What a control fault usually means on a GE
On a GE dishwasher, unresponsive buttons or a code on the display is usually the membrane touch panel or the door latch switch rather than the main control board. GE mounts a touch console directly above a door that vents warm, damp air, and the console fails long before the board does. Control lock and a dropped door account for much of the rest. None of the checks below need a meter.
What you are seeing
- Some buttons respond and others do nothing, consistently.
- The panel lights but refuses to start a cycle.
- The display shows a code, or the cycle lights blink in a repeating pattern.
- The machine reports the door open with the door plainly shut.
- Not this fault: The cycle starts and stalls with water in the tub - that is a drainage fault.
- Not this fault: Dishes come out dirty with the cycle completing normally - read the cleaning page.
Most likely causes, in GE order
- Control lock or delay start engaged — Why ranked: First because it costs nothing to clear and it perfectly mimics a failed console. It is switched on by accident more often than owners expect.
- Membrane touch panel failed — Why ranked: The characteristic GE fault. Each key is its own contact and moisture kills them one at a time, which is why some buttons still work.
- Door latch assembly or its switch not confirming closed — Why ranked: The latch reports closure to the board. A worn latch, or a door that has sagged on its hinges, reads to the machine as a door left open.
- Ribbon or harness connector unseated at the console — Why ranked: Produces whole dead sections of the panel rather than scattered keys, and it survives every board replacement.
- Main control board failed — Why ranked: Last, because on GE dishwashers the console reaches the end of its life well before the board does.
What to check, in order
- Look for a lock indicator and hold the lock key to clear it. — Because: Free, instant, and it explains a panel that lights and beeps but refuses to run.
- Press every key in turn and note which respond. — Because: Scattered dead keys indict the panel; a whole dead region indicts a connector instead.
- Open and close the door firmly, then look at the latch and the hinge line. — Because: Rank three is visible: a sagging door or a slack latch shows up before any meter is needed.
- Cut power at the breaker, restore it, and see whether the code returns. — Because: It separates a latched historical code from a live, repeating fault.

- Stop rule: Stop here. Opening the inner door panel to reach the ribbon or the latch switch exposes line-voltage terminals, and that is service work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before removing the door panel or the toe kick. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Dishwashers are commonly hard-wired, so pulling the machine out does not disconnect it. Never bypass the door latch switch to make a cycle run with the door open. Do not work on a hard-wired machine while it is only switched off at the console.
When this becomes a service call
Keys stay dead after the lock is cleared and the door is confirmed shut. The machine reports the door open with a latch that visibly engages. The panel is dark with the breaker confirmed on and the machine hard-wired. You see scorching or smell hot plastic at the console - kill the breaker and stop.
