The short answer
Noise from an EdgeStar compact dishwasher is usually something touching the spray arm. - The machine stored closed and damp between uses — a portable is wheeled away with the door shut and the tub wet, often into a warm cupboard, and that combination does more for a smell than any amount of detergent choice
- A tall item catching the spray arm — first by a long way on this class: the arm sweeps close to the load in a small cavity, and a handle, a lid or an over-hanging plate produces a knock on every rotation
- The machine not sitting flat on the worktop — a rocking machine drums into the worktop and turns normal pump vibration into something audible across the room
