The short answer
An EdgeStar compact dishwasher that leaves food behind is usually being loaded for a machine it is not. There is one spray arm, one sweep and one height, so anything that shadows the arm comes out dirty no matter how good the pump is. Most likely causes on a compact portable dishwasher, in order
- Loading against a single spray arm — first, and by a distance: a compact cavity has one arm at one height, so a tall pan, an over-hanging plate or a bowl face-up blocks the sweep and everything behind it stays dry — this ranking would be completely different on a full-size machine with two or three arms
- The machine not level where it was parked — a portable is wheeled to a different spot each time, and a machine standing out of level fills to an uneven depth and sprays unevenly — a variable a fixed machine simply does not have
- Inlet water temperature — a compact machine filling from the quick-connect fitting at the tap is often taking cold water, and detergent that never reaches its working temperature simply does not do its job
What to check, and why in this order
- Check the machine is standing level where it has actually been parked — A portable is in a different place and a different attitude for every cycle
- Run one cycle with a deliberately light, well-spaced load and nothing tall in it. If that comes out clean, the machine is fine and the answer is loading — No further diagnosis is needed
- Run the tap until it is hot before starting a fill, or fill the tank with hot water where the model allows it. This is second — It is the other change that costs nothing and it targets grease specifically

- Empty the machine and run one cycle with six or seven well-spaced items and nothing taller than the arm can clear. — Time: one cycle.
- Put a level on the top of the machine where it stands for the cycle and adjust or reposition it until it is flat. — Time: several minutes.

- Before the next fill, run the kitchen tap until the water is hot, then start the machine or fill its tank from that tap. — Time: a few minutes.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Unplug the machine before taking a filter or a spray arm out, and let it stand after a hot cycle before reaching into the sump — wash water in a compact machine can be hot enough to scald. Never mix a dishwasher cleaner with bleach or with any other cleaning product.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when a light, well-spaced load with hot water, a clear arm and a clean filter still comes out dirty; when the arm will not turn under water pressure; or when the machine is obviously not filling to its normal level. Pump and diverter work is not an owner job.
