The answer first
A dishwasher that starts and then stalls is waiting on a condition it cannot satisfy: water in, water out, a door it can confirm, or a temperature it cannot reach. On a Crosley a heating step that never completes comes first, because on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. What you observe
- It restarts the same stage over and over — A condition being retried rather than a control fault.
- It runs for a few minutes and stops with water inside — The drain step failed, which halts everything after it.
- It hums but no water enters — A fill problem: valve, hose or supply.

Why it happens, in order
- A heating step that never completes — Ranked first here: on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. Where a machine waits for temperature it cannot achieve, the cycle appears frozen although the pump is running normally.
- A drain step that cannot complete — Ranked second: The machine must empty between stages; a blocked filter, air gap or hose stalls the programme rather than stopping the machine.
- A fill that is too slow or absent — Ranked third: A partly closed valve, a kinked hose or a silted inlet screen leaves the machine short of water within its allowed time.
- A door latch that drops out mid-cycle — Ranked fourth, and last: A latch marginal enough to open under the movement of hot water stops the programme exactly as if the door had been opened. A cabinet that has been in several rooms has usually been dragged at least once, and the door is what goes out of true.
What to check first, second, third
- Touch a plate at the stall — A cold load with a stalled timer on a hot programme points at the heating circuit. It goes first because on a machine of this age the wearing parts are where the fault usually is, and this one is quick to confirm.
- Open the door at the stall and look for standing water — Water in the sump at the stall is the strongest clue available and it points at the drain path.
- Listen for water entering in the first minute — Silence where water should be arriving points at the supply rather than at the machine.
What to try before calling
- Bail the sump, clean the filter and clear the air gap, then run a drain-only or cancel cycle — If the machine then empties normally, the drain path was the fault.

What to do before a panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the taps before any hose comes off, and never bypass a door or lid switch to run the machine open.
What needs a technician
Call when the supply is open, the filter and air gap are clear, the door latches firmly and the float moves freely, and the cycle still stalls at the same point.
