Bosch Dishwasher E24: Drain Pump Timeout — Water Not Evacuating
E24 is the primary drain failure code on Bosch dishwashers. The drain pump ran for its full allocated time (approximately 2-4 minutes depending on cycle phase) but the water level sensor still detects water remaining in the sump. The board shuts down the cycle to prevent the next fill from overfilling the tub.
Drain System Architecture in BSH Dishwashers
The Bosch drain path consists of five elements in series — a blockage anywhere stops drainage:
- Sump/filter area: Where wash water collects after filtering
- Drain pump: Small impeller pump mounted to the sump housing, driven by a permanent-magnet motor
- Check valve: One-way valve immediately after the pump that prevents backflow
- Drain hose: Ribbed rubber hose routing from the pump output through the cabinet to the disposal/drain connection
- Connection point: Where the hose terminates at the disposal knockout, drain pipe adapter, or air gap device

Systematic Diagnosis (From Easiest to Hardest)
1. Drain Hose Kink Check (30 seconds)
Pull the dishwasher forward enough to see the drain hose routing. The hose runs from the pump along the base frame, up through the cabinet side, and connects under the sink. Common kink points:
- Where the hose bends at the machine's rear corner
- Where it passes through the cabinet side hole
- Where excess hose is coiled under the sink
Straighten any kinks. If the hose has permanently deformed at a kink point, replace it.
2. Disposal Knockout Verification (2 minutes)
If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, the disposal must have its internal knockout plug removed. When a new disposal is installed, this plug is sometimes left in place — completely blocking dishwasher drainage. Remove the plug by inserting a screwdriver through the disposal's dishwasher inlet port and tapping it free. Retrieve the plug from inside the disposal.
This single issue is the most common cause of E24 on newly installed dishwashers.
3. Coin Trap (Drain Filter) Cleaning (5 minutes)
Some Bosch models have a coin trap (small screw-off cap on the drain pump housing, accessible behind the kick plate). Unscrew the cap (counterclockwise — have towels ready, water will drain). Remove debris — common finds include seeds, toothpicks, broken glass shards, twist ties, and coins that dropped from clothing in the kitchen.
4. Check Valve Inspection (10 minutes)
The check valve immediately after the drain pump can accumulate grease and food residue that prevents it from opening fully. From behind the kick plate:
- Locate the drain pump outlet
- Disconnect the drain hose from the pump outlet
- The check valve is visible inside the outlet port — it is a rubber flap or ball
- Push it open with a finger or small tool — it should swing freely. If stuck, clean with hot water and a small brush
- If the valve material has hardened or warped (common after 8+ years), replace the drain pump assembly (the check valve is integrated)
5. Drain Pump Motor Test (10 minutes)
If the hose, knockout, coin trap, and check valve are all clear but E24 persists:
- Power off at breaker
- Disconnect the drain pump's electrical connector (2-pin plug)
- Measure resistance: expect 100-200 ohms. OL = open winding (pump motor dead). Near-zero = shorted winding
- If resistance is normal, the pump may be seized mechanically. Try spinning the impeller through the drain outlet — it should rotate freely
Parts and Pricing
| Part | BSH Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump assembly | 00620774 | $65-$95 |
| Drain hose | 00298564 | $20-$35 |
| Coin trap cap/seal | 00645038 | $10-$15 |
Professional repair: $175-$425. Diagnosis time is the main variable — once the specific blockage or failure is found, repair itself is straightforward. On-site time: 30-75 minutes.

Preventing E24
- Scrape plates before loading — large food debris overwhelms the filter and reaches the drain
- Clean the coin trap monthly (if your model has one)
- Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher — a full disposal backs up into the drain hose
- Never use regular dish soap — suds clog the check valve and drain path
