Bosch Dishwasher E22: Filter System Compromise and Drain Path Restriction
E22 on a Bosch dishwasher indicates the fine-mesh filter and drain path are not maintaining adequate water clarity. The turbidity sensor (optical sensor that measures water cloudiness) reports that recirculated water remains excessively dirty after the expected filtration time. This either means the filter is damaged (allowing food particles to bypass filtration) or the drain path is partially clogged (preventing dirty water from being expelled).
Bosch Triple-Filter Architecture
Bosch dishwashers use a three-component filter system engineered for quiet operation (the alternative — a hard food disposer — generates significant noise):
- Coarse filter (outer cylinder): Large mesh that catches big debris — bones, pits, large food chunks. Removes with a counterclockwise quarter-turn
- Fine-mesh microfilter (inner plate): Traps smaller particles down to approximately 0.5mm. Lifts out after the coarse filter is removed
- Ultra-fine screen (integrated into sump): Catches particles that pass the microfilter. This component is not user-removable
E22 typically points to problems with layers 2 or 3 — the fine filtration components.

Diagnosing E22
Visual Filter Inspection
Remove the lower rack. Twist the coarse filter counterclockwise and lift. Remove the fine-mesh plate. Inspect both under bright light:
- Torn or punctured mesh: Even a 2mm tear in the fine filter allows food particles into the recirculation system, contaminating the turbidity sensor. A torn filter must be replaced — patching is not viable because the mesh is too fine for adhesive repair
- Gasket seal failure: The fine filter sits on a rubber gasket in the sump. If this gasket is compressed flat or displaced, unfiltered water bypasses the filter entirely. Check that the gasket is present and sits in its groove
- Calcium deposits on mesh: White scale on the filter mesh blocks water flow through the filter, reducing filtration rate. The turbidity sensor sees water that has bypassed the clogged filter via the gasket seal. Soak the filter in citric acid solution for 30 minutes
Turbidity Sensor Check
The turbidity sensor is an optical device — an LED shines light through the water and a photocell measures how much light reaches the other side. Clean water allows high light transmission; dirty water blocks it.
The sensor is located inside the sump, not easily accessible without disassembly. However, a simple test: run an empty cycle with no dishes and no detergent. If E22 does not appear, the sensor works fine and the issue is filtration. If E22 appears even with clean water and clean filters, the sensor itself is contaminated with grease film or has failed.
Drain Path Partial Blockage
E22 can also result from a partially blocked drain path that prevents dirty water from being expelled during the drain phase:
- Check the drain hose for kinks (especially where it loops behind the machine)
- Inspect the disposal connection — food buildup inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet port is extremely common and restricts drain flow
- If connected to an air gap, check the air gap cap for blockage (remove the cap and clean the chamber)
Repair Actions
Filter replacement: BSH 00645038 for the complete triple-filter assembly ($25-$40). This is the most common fix for E22 and takes under 5 minutes — no tools needed.
Turbidity sensor cleaning: Requires sump access. Remove the filters and spray arm, then reach into the sump to locate the sensor (small cylindrical probe). Wipe the optical surfaces with a soft cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
Disposal connection cleaning: Turn off the disposal at the breaker. Use a bottle brush inserted through the disposal's dishwasher inlet port to clear accumulated food debris. This alone resolves approximately 20% of E22 cases.
