Bosch Dishwasher E18: Fill Timeout — Insufficient Water Delivery
E18 indicates the dishwasher did not reach its minimum required water level within the programmed fill window (typically 5-8 minutes depending on cycle). Unlike E16 (which detects a dead inlet valve solenoid), E18 confirms the valve is electrically functional — it opened — but not enough water reached the tub. The board measures water level via either a pressure switch or a float sensor and times out when the target level is not reached.
Why E18 Is the Most Misdiagnosed Bosch Code
E18 has the widest range of potential causes of any Bosch dishwasher error, because the fill system involves components both inside and outside the machine:
External causes (outside the dishwasher):
- Municipal water supply pressure drop (construction, main break, peak usage)
- Supply valve under sink partially closed or restricted by sediment
- Kinked or crushed supply hose under the counter
- Multiple fixtures running simultaneously (irrigation system, washing machine, showers), dropping supply pressure below Bosch's 20 PSI minimum
Internal causes (inside the dishwasher):
- Inlet screen clogged with sediment (see E16 guide for cleaning)
- AquaStop supply hose partially restricted
- Pressure switch tube kinked, disconnected, or clogged
- Float switch stuck in the raised (full) position, falsely telling the board the tub is already full
- Drain hose too low or connected improperly, causing water to siphon out as fast as it fills in

Quick Diagnosis Sequence
Step 1: Supply Pressure Check (2 minutes)
Disconnect the supply hose from the dishwasher inlet. Hold it over a bucket. Open the supply valve. Time how long to fill 1 gallon:
- Under 30 seconds = adequate pressure
- 30-60 seconds = borderline, may cause E18 on longer fill cycles
- Over 60 seconds = insufficient pressure, E18 is expected. Fix the supply side first
Step 2: Drain Siphon Check (1 minute)
Examine how the drain hose connects to the disposal or drain pipe. The hose must rise to at least 20 inches above the floor BEFORE descending to the connection point (high-loop). Without this loop, gravity siphons water out of the tub during fill. Check if the high-loop clamp is still attached to the underside of the countertop.
Alternatively, if an air gap device is installed on the sink, verify it is not clogged. A plugged air gap backs up drain water and can also restrict fill performance.
Step 3: Pressure Switch / Float Sensor (10 minutes)
Power off at breaker. Remove kick plate.
Pressure switch systems (older 500 Series): Follow the small rubber tube from the sump area up to the pressure switch mounted on the side of the tub or frame. Check for kinks, holes, or disconnections. Blow gently into the tube — you should hear a click from the switch at a specific pressure. No click = dead switch.
Float sensor systems (800 Series, newer 500 Series): The float is a disc in the base pan area. Lift and release it by hand — it should move freely up and down. If it is stuck in the raised position (mineral deposits, debris), the board thinks the tub is full and cuts fill short.
Addressing the Root Cause
| Root Cause | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Low supply pressure | Open valve fully or fix plumbing restriction | $0 |
| Clogged inlet screen | Clean or replace screen | $0-$3 |
| Missing high-loop on drain hose | Reposition and clamp hose to 20" height | $0 |
| Stuck float switch | Clean float and pivot with vinegar | $0 |
| Bad pressure switch | Replace switch | $25-$45 |
| Failed AquaStop hose | Replace complete hose | $55-$85 |
| Inlet valve partially stuck | Replace inlet valve | $35-$85 |
Professional repair: $150-$400. The diagnostic challenge is determining which of many possible causes is responsible. Systematic testing takes 20-30 minutes. Actual repair is usually simple once the cause is identified.

Intermittent E18
If E18 appears only sometimes — say, once a week — the most likely cause is an external pressure drop that coincides with high household or municipal water usage. Run the dishwasher at night when competing demand is lowest. If E18 never appears during off-peak hours, the problem is supply pressure, not the dishwasher.
