Bosch Dishwasher E15: AquaStop Leak Protection Activated
E15 is Bosch's most urgent dishwasher code — it means water has reached the AquaStop float switch in the machine's base pan. The system immediately shuts off the water inlet valve and energizes the drain pump to remove as much water as possible. This is not a sensor malfunction or a nuisance code — E15 means water is physically present somewhere it should not be.
How BSH AquaStop Works (Unique to Bosch/Siemens/Gaggenau)
Bosch's AquaStop system is a multi-layer leak protection unique to BSH Group appliances:
- Double-wall supply hose: The water supply hose has an inner delivery tube surrounded by an outer containment tube. If the inner tube bursts, water is captured in the outer tube and routed to the base pan rather than flooding the kitchen
- Mechanical shutoff valve: A spring-loaded valve at the faucet connection end of the supply hose. If the outer tube fills with water (indicating inner tube failure), the valve mechanically closes water supply without needing electricity
- Electronic float switch: A polystyrene float in the base pan rises when water accumulates. When it reaches trigger height (~5mm of water), it closes a circuit to the EGS board, which posts E15 and activates protective shutdown
- Drain pump activation: The drain pump runs continuously when E15 is active, attempting to evacuate any water in the system

Finding the Leak Source
The base pan caught the water, but where did it come from? Systematic diagnosis:
Tilt Test
With the machine powered off at breaker, gently tilt the dishwasher backward (have someone support it). This drains accumulated water away from the float switch. If E15 clears after power-up and does not return for several cycles, the leak was transient — likely caused by oversudsing or a temporary seal compression.
Common Leak Sources by Frequency
Spray arm seal failure (most common): The rubber O-ring where the upper spray arm tube meets the manifold in the door deteriorates over time. Water sprays onto the door interior during wash and drips down into the base pan via the door hinge area. Check the O-ring for cracks, compression set, or misalignment.
Sump-to-tub gasket leak: The large rubber gasket where the sump housing connects to the tub floor develops compression set after thousands of heating-cooling cycles. This leak produces a slow drip during the wash phase. Visible as wetness around the sump housing underside.
Drain pump housing crack: The plastic drain pump housing can crack from impact (if something heavy fell against it during installation) or thermal stress. Cracks are often hairline and invisible when dry — run the machine with the kick plate removed and a flashlight aimed at the pump during a cycle.
Supply hose connection leak: The supply hose fitting at the machine inlet can develop a slow drip if the rubber washer inside the fitting has compressed flat. Remove the hose, inspect the washer, and replace if it is thin or deformed.
Resetting E15
E15 will not self-clear even after the water source is fixed. You must manually reset:
- Power off at breaker for 60 seconds
- If possible, tilt the machine back to drain the base pan (or use towels to absorb the water)
- Restore power
- The drain pump may run for 1-2 minutes as a precaution — this is normal
- If the float switch has dropped (water drained), E15 clears
- If E15 returns immediately, water is still reaching the base pan — the leak source has not been resolved

When E15 Indicates Oversudsing, Not a Leak
Excessive detergent — especially using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent — creates foam that rises above the tub seal line and overflows into the base pan. If E15 appeared after changing detergent brands or using a new pod type, this is the likely cause. Run 2-3 empty rinse cycles to flush residual suds, then verify E15 does not return with the correct detergent and dose.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Sacramento-Specific Note
Hard water in the Sacramento area accelerates seal degradation because mineral deposits create rough surfaces on gaskets and O-rings, grinding them during thermal expansion cycles. If you have untreated hard water and E15 appeared on a machine older than 6 years, inspect all rubber seals — they may all be nearing end of life simultaneously.
